garage201020 May 2010 00:03Hello, I’m not sure if this is the right place to ask, but I’ll give it a try. We have attached a garage to an existing single-family house. Now, a sewage charge of nearly 1056,- is being imposed retroactively for the wastewater sewer system for this garage. The house was connected to the wastewater sewer system in 2004. Back then, the free-standing carport was not charged. Since the now built garage was constructed as an extension to the single-family house and is connected to the old exterior side door as an enclosed space (3 lockable garage doors), the garage is now being charged retroactively at the same rate as the house was in 2004. - The garage does not produce any wastewater (no sink, no tap) - Rainwater is collected in the old shafts (previously sealed) and used for garden irrigation - It is a paved space, not insulated, so the space could be made habitable - The new garage was built to replace the dilapidated carport Now the actual problem: - The municipality says that any extension should be assessed the same as the house - It makes no difference whether it is a conservatory, a residential extension, or a garage - The use is irrelevant to the sewage charge - The decisive factor is solely the term “extension” - If we had placed the garage one meter away from the house, this additional fee would not have been imposed - If the garage had not been enclosed and connected to the house, i.e. built again as an open carport made of wood or a stone shed (as it is now built but without garage doors), the costs would not apply - Others in the town have garages the same size or even larger and pay no sewage charges simply because their garages are free-standing What can I do? Honestly, I feel cheated. I have even considered submitting an amendment request to the county and removing the garage doors to avoid paying this approximately 1000,- fee. Can they really base this on the term *extension* in our building permit / planning permission? Especially when the use of our attached garage is the same as any other (car shelter and workbench)? It would be great if someone has an opinion or, even better, advice for me. Thank you!
