Hello everyone,

In our new apartment, there is a network socket in every room, and I would like to set up a Wi-Fi network using them. The connection should still be through Unitymedia, so via the cable connection. Currently, all the network cables come together in the distribution cabinet.

Now the question is, what do I need to connect my Unitymedia modem and distribute the signal accordingly? I am attaching a photo of the cabinet.

Good luck and thanks for the help.

You can place your provider’s router or a cable FritzBox next to the antenna socket and connect it to the network outlet using a patch cable. In the main distribution cabinet, the keystone modules (termination jacks for the network cables) still need to be installed. If you install a small switch there, you can connect all the network outlets together. This way, all network outlets will have internet access, and you can set up access points.

Normally, I would always separate the router and Wi-Fi, but for a minimal network wiring setup, I would use a FritzBox 6591 and start with an AVM 2400 on another floor, which operates as an access point via LAN. For Wi-Fi, it is always important that these devices are placed as high and as free as possible.

Would it possibly work if I connect my Connect Box as usual to an MMD, then send the signal to the adjacent network socket, use the appropriate cable in the cabinet to connect to the switch, and from the switch to the remaining two network sockets, with two access points and one Apple TV connected?

Thanks, you were quicker, that’s how I’ll proceed.

What still surprises me, however, is that I have four network outlets in the apartment, but there are five cables in the cabinet. I need to find out who installed this.

Maybe the fifth cable leads to the basement. If a fiber optic connection is installed there someday, it will go directly from the modem to you upstairs via an Ethernet cable. If that’s the case, someone was thinking ahead for once.
