Hello everyone,

I am currently planning my new kitchen using IKEA Metod kitchen units and want it to be not only visually appealing but, above all, ergonomic and practical. My main focus is on a well-considered working height, sensible arrangement of cabinets for short distances, and ergonomically optimal positioning of the sink, stove, and countertops.

Does anyone have tips or proven concepts for designing Metod kitchen systems so they are truly comfortable for everyday use? I am especially interested in how to use storage space efficiently without losing overview—for example, through specific interior fittings or clever division of drawers and cabinets.

Maybe also advice on integrating appliances or modular elements so that everything remains easily accessible and the kitchen is as back-friendly as possible. I look forward to your experiences and ideas!

Thanks for the quick and helpful responses so far!

I will check my working height using the elbow measurement; that sounds sensible and personalized. I also liked the idea of the VARIERA internal pull-outs, as I had previously thought I could only combine drawers and cabinets.

[@JORDON] I have always considered drawers with soft-close mechanisms a valuable addition, so I need to specifically verify this with Metod.

I’m wondering how you solve the corner cabinets? Optimizing storage space without neglecting the corner seems challenging. Can carousels really handle this that well?

And what about combining tall cabinets with standard base cabinets? Does it make sense to integrate certain appliances into tall cabinets for better ergonomics?

Corners are indeed a challenge in kitchen design. Carousel solutions are among the most practical options because they make full use of the space and remain easily accessible. However, they require a bit more room since they need space to rotate.

Alternatively, pull-out drawers or cabinet systems with magic corners that extend outward when opened are an option. These can be implemented with some accessories in Metod kitchens, and I’ve heard they work well in practice.

Yes, tall cabinets for ovens and microwaves are great ergonomically because you operate the appliances at eye or chest level without bending down. They are also good for storing pantry items. Just make sure the cabinets’ interiors don’t remain too dark and are well ventilated if technically necessary.

I would like to add some points regarding corner units and tall cabinets:

- If possible, equip corner cabinets with swing-out shelves or a carousel unit, as this saves a lot of time and frustration when accessing items.
- Tall cabinets are great for ergonomic access to appliances such as ovens and dishwashers (meaning you don’t have to bend down as much, which is easier on your back).
- When planning, make sure that drawers and pull-outs are sturdy and have a high weight capacity, especially when storing large pots or heavy equipment.

Additionally, I recommend choosing modular interior fittings for Metod units to maintain flexibility even after installation.

Absolutely! I have one of those carousel units in the corner – super practical, it almost feels like a little magic trick 😄

Tall cabinets with built-in appliances are great, but you still need to make sure you don’t end up with awkward climbing situations. So, don’t go too high with the height.

Also, I’d recommend testing drawer slides, at least in the preliminary kitchen, to see if the drawers run smoothly before ordering the final version. Sometimes the damping systems differ slightly, but that makes a big difference in everyday usability.
