Hello everyone,
We are planning to buy a semi-detached house and have the option to choose a side with windows facing west (although there is another house located just a few meters away) or facing south (there are no houses nearby, only garages). The windows are in the living-dining area, bathroom, and bedroom.
Best regards

Then probably rather the south side, from the west you have little because of the other house, even less in winter due to the sun’s position 🙁

Thank you for your response. Yes, that was also my thought. Between the houses on the west side, there are two garages, followed immediately by the front facade of the other house. The houses are 9 meters (30 feet) high.

There are excellent sun path tools available online that allow you to easily simulate the sun’s position and shadow casting at different times of the year, so you can see how much you will be affected by neighboring houses. Just search for “sun path” on Google 😉

From my gut feeling, I agree with Yvonne; in my opinion, the south side is the better choice.

@PhiTh
I recently visited this great website – it confirmed for me what I often share here: generally speaking, the sun sets in the west during very few months. Especially in the darker part of the year, unfortunately only in the southwest. Therefore, south-facing windows offer an advantage when it matters most, namely in winter 🙂

Thank you all! I think we won’t go wrong with the south-facing windows then. On the west side, there are two garages between the two houses, so shading can be expected there. And yes, the website is really helpful 🙂.
