Hello,

I am planning to add an extension to a small outbuilding. It is about 13 meters long and approximately 3 to 3.5 meters wide (43 to 46 feet wide). The building already has a flat roof, with the beams resting at the front and a wall about 80 cm high (31 inches) built up at the back, creating a small attic space.

I want to raise this attic over a length of about 4 meters (13 feet) to convert it into a bedroom. I’m not sure how high yet, but I’m thinking around 1 meter (3 feet). My question is: Can I do this myself? Is it possible to raise a roof and build up walls like this with some basic DIY skills?

Also, what materials would be best to use? Specifically, what kind of bricks or blocks would be suitable?

I would appreciate any advice.

Thank you very much!

Best regards

Bob

I think you’re the best person to judge how well you can do masonry or not. Have you done it before? If not, it could obviously go wrong ;-) Just try building a small wall and see if it works out. Otherwise, I would have a professional do it.
