Hello everyone,
My parents-in-law are currently building a prefabricated house and recently attended the interior selection appointment. Over the course of two days, they were able to choose the entire interior design in a showroom, including windows, doors, tiles, and more. I think this is really great because it keeps the effort for the homeowners to a minimum.
We want to build a solid (brick-and-mortar) house and are currently looking for a company that offers turnkey construction. How is the interior selection handled in this case? Are there providers where this process is just as convenient, or do you then have to coordinate separately with numerous individual tradespeople?
It is also very important to us that all building materials are "healthy," meaning low in harmful substances, ideally certified with a corresponding label.
I would appreciate any tips.
Best regards

And those who haven’t considered what they like and prefer before the sample selection phase perhaps shouldn’t build a house. Not everyone can do that; during the year I may have two clients who want to finalize the fittings before construction starts. The rest decide during the actual work phases, as the wide variety of options can be too distracting; the "fear" of missing out is tangible.

Best regardsHello,
We bought a turnkey house. The quality was specified in the notarized construction service description. The builder had many samples of materials on site (e.g., hardwood flooring / tiles). Series of sanitary fittings were also specified.
We were glad not to have to rush through everything in two days; we could also change options later for either an additional cost or no extra charge. Especially for the sanitary fittings, we chose a higher-quality version with a reasonable additional cost.
My view is that two days is simply too overwhelming. We were able to calmly review whether the furniture would match the flooring or even hold up tiles against the unfinished walls to see how they looked.
Sometimes I feel like house building gets treated like configuring a car...
@HilfeHilfe, as mentioned, it’s definitely possible to prepare well in advance. We already have samples of all the floor coverings, kitchen cabinets, and even original tiles—these days, that’s no problem. I have also visited the selection appointments several times. You can look as much as you want, but when I have to decide onsite, I usually don’t have the patience to spend hours figuring out what fits and what doesn’t. The effort happens earlier because you review everything upfront, and even then I still have the option to decide on changes. But at some point, you’re also glad when everything is finalized.
We built with a general contractor on a turnkey basis and spent weeks browsing their showroom at a large building materials supplier. It’s open on Sundays and practically just around the corner. We made decisions, looked up information, changed our minds... among other things, we had various tile samples laid out in the hallway for trial, which we ultimately did not choose.
Towards the end, we went out and got samples from the local tile shop, which our general contractor then arranged for us.
We enjoyed the process. However, the initial selection of materials and finishes (roof tiles, facade, interior doors, etc.) took nearly 4 hours. First of all, we had already dealt with this in detail during the shell construction phase, so secondly, we were familiar with the standard offerings and knew exactly what we wanted to choose—and where we would deviate.
Since then, we hold the record. 😀 Usually, the material selection process takes up to two days. 🙂

Thank you very much for your responses. We plan to build in the Munich area, and if anyone can recommend a construction company for turnkey building, I would appreciate it. Regarding "healthy" building: I don’t want to have to consider every single building material myself; rather, I want a company that has already taken care of that in advance. Is this really standard practice with all companies nowadays?
Best regards

If I want to buy an organic wholegrain bread, I don’t necessarily go to Aldi.
In that sense, you should contact the relevant house building companies.
I find it easy to find some by googling “eco house construction Bavaria.”
Whether their living walls and natural insulation are really that good is something you need to find out for yourself, and whether they use solid construction is questionable. However, organic products usually come with different prices. 😉
