A French drain or drainage pipe directs water (rainwater or groundwater from slopes) that accumulates around a building away from it.
Whether water collects in the basement or foundation area of the house, or whether groundwater from a slope flows towards the house, depends on the property: location (slope?) and soil conditions (permeable, impermeable, etc.).
If there is a risk that rainwater or groundwater could cause damage to the house, a French drain is necessary to divert water away from the building—regardless of whether the house stands alone.
