Hello everyone,

I’m facing the problem of wanting to place a Billy bookshelf from Ikea in a room with an uneven floor. The unevenness is not extreme, but noticeable enough that the bookshelf doesn’t stand steadily. Since I also want to fill the shelf with fairly heavy books, I would like to know what options are available to securely and permanently stabilize the Billy bookshelf on uneven floors.

I am especially interested in practical methods that leave as little residue as possible—I prefer not to make major structural changes, but rather work with small aids or adjustments. Are there special adjustable feet, pads, or other tips to make the bookshelf completely stable so it doesn’t tip over or shift in everyday use?

I look forward to your opinions, experiences, and advice!

Thanks in advance.

This is definitely a challenge, but not impossible. Usually, it’s enough to equip the shelf’s feet with special adjustable furniture glides. You can simply attach these under the existing feet and then adjust them individually to the floor’s unevenness. This compensates for small height differences.

Alternatively, anti-slip pads or self-adhesive felt or rubber pads can be helpful to prevent slipping, especially if the floor is smooth.

If the shelf still wobbles, I would recommend additionally securing it to the wall. Most Billy shelves come with wall fasteners that prevent the shelf from tipping over. This is especially important when holding heavy loads.

If the entire shelf stands on a strongly uneven floor, you can also use wooden wedges or thin spacers under the feet. These can be cut to size individually and improve stability.

I hope this helps you for now. 🙂

Hello Tabesnik,

I would like to add some additional and more detailed information on this often underestimated issue. Positioning a Billy shelf unit stably on an uneven floor is important to ensure both the safety and longevity of the furniture.

First of all, a systematic approach: place the shelf at its final location and check with a spirit level in several places—on the top surface, the sides, and the shelves themselves—to assess the extent of the unevenness. This is crucial to determine the necessary adjustments.

Adjustable furniture feet are a simple solution for compensation, as Ramon4 already mentioned. These are available as accessories and sometimes come with rubber buffers that also dampen slight movements. This way, you can individually adjust each foot using a threaded spindle. Important: if you use something like this, regularly check that nothing has loosened, especially under the load of heavy books.

If you are not allowed or do not want to drill holes in the floor, I still strongly recommend securing the shelf to the wall. The brackets that come with the Billy set are quick to install and greatly increase safety. Especially on unstable floors, tipping over can easily occur otherwise.

Another option, if you have a particularly smooth floor surface, is to use non-slip rubber mats or anti-slip tapes. You can place these under the shelf feet. Caution: if the unevenness is significant, this alone will not be very effective.

This is important but only in combination with a stable stance itself.

If the unevenness is larger, you can cut small shims yourself from plywood or laminated wood. Place these under the shelf feet and sand or file the edges so that everything sits flat.

Finally, one tip: make sure not to overload the Billy shelf, especially on the upper shelves, as this can cause bending or tipping despite all the fixation.

I hope this information is helpful. Feel free to provide details about the unevenness if you want more specific advice.

That’s true, and something I’ve had great results with is a combination of adjustable feet plus non-slip rubber pads. You can make the shelf rock-solid stable so it won’t wobble, even if you really kick it with your foot.

And honestly, who places a shelf like Billy on a perfectly level tile floor anyway? In our older building, I always handled it like this too. Plus, you don’t need to make it complicated. A little adjustment here, a rubber mat there, and voilà: the shelf stands securely.

That’s why I also advise against adhesive solutions – it’s easier with furniture gliders and brackets fixed to the wall.

Oh, and if you’re worried about the shelf eventually squeaking or creaking: a small amount of furniture wax or Teflon spray on the feet works wonders 😉

Good luck with it, and let us know how it goes! 🙂
