Good evening everyone,

We built our first house in 1994, and back then, smart home technology or systems like Eurobus were not an option due to costs. Now the old house is much too big for us, so we are building a small bungalow.

I would like to automate/integrate the following:
Roller shutter control
Outdoor cameras
Music in every room
Motion detectors in the garage, entrance area, and utility room
Photovoltaic system + battery storage
Air source heat pump
Air conditioning

Except for Homematic IP, which I know from acquaintances, I am not familiar with such systems. Online, there is too much information to properly evaluate as a layperson.

I hope you can help me or at least point me in the right direction.

Best regards,

Hello,
I am in the process of installing Loxone in our house. The electrical cabinets (main and sub-distribution in the garage) were professionally designed and built according to our requirements. I am laying the cables and installing spots and lights. The electrician handles the important tasks.
I can do the programming myself using the Loxone software. With a few videos, it is not very difficult. So far, I am impressed. For cameras, we will use Ubiquiti.

Hello alles3d,

That sounds very interesting, but probably a bit too much.
Does Loxone work more like Homematic or rather KNX in terms of capabilities?
Do you still have to pay a monthly fee for the Loxone software?

Best regards,
Armany

The software is free. You can integrate a wide range of devices. Modbus makes it straightforward, and there are many pre-made program modules available for download for numerous products. The support in the related forums is very good.

I was able to easily integrate the Sungrow inverter via Modbus and use Loxone’s energy management system to charge the electric cars with surplus energy from the photovoltaic system. Since the charging station is located in the garage, I created an automation in the mobile app that closes the garage door to 90% after 30 seconds when a car is connected to the charging station and is charging. We have a Hörmann garage door, which is directly supported by Loxone.

@Bierwächter and @alles3d are taking a great approach. They come up with automation scenarios and then put them into practice. The joy of succeeding is huge and priceless. That’s how a happy hobby works.
I completely understand the fascination of diving into this playground, even though I have chosen not to.

Key points:
1. I do not want to become the system administrator in my wife’s life—and she does not want that either. Everyone should be able to understand and operate the basic functions in the house independently, without needing a manual or having to intervene anywhere.
2. I am uncomfortable with surveillance. Therefore, there are no devices that could record who is in the house at what time and place, let alone what a person says or does.
3. We observed with our parents that things not learned in childhood tend to be forgotten later. This includes operating touch dimmer switches or devices with menu navigation. I want to delay for as long as possible the moment when I no longer understand my own home. The scene where my father realized he couldn’t turn the light on has stayed with me. I do not want to go down that path.

Before anyone thinks that I generally reject home automation because of this—no, I do not impose my stance on others.
