ᐅ Seating at the kitchen island: yes or no?

Hello,

we are currently planning our kitchen, and most things are more or less decided. However, we are still discussing one topic in more detail, which is the seating arrangement directly at the kitchen island.

Our layout: a kitchen run along the wall, a kitchen island, and then the dining table (all in one room of about 40 m2 (430 sq ft)). I’m interested to know if anyone else has this layout and if you included seating (bar stools/counter seating) at the kitchen island, and what your experiences have been. Would you do it the same way again, or would you skip it next time due to low usage? We suspect it might not be necessary since the dining table is right there anyway, and somehow a straight kitchen island just looks better...

Best regards

Comfortable bar stools are probably essential. Does anyone have recommendations? We are currently looking at Calligaris - New York.

What is located on the island, specifically opposite the seating area?
If the cooktop and hood are placed there, I find it not only impractical but also unnecessary and unusable.

Why wouldn’t it be usable? There are restaurants where the cooking happens right in front of you, and of course, you pay for that experience. It’s the same in our kitchen, where we have a 90° glass counter around the kitchen island...

@joho78: It really depends on personal preference, as mentioned above. Some people think it’s complete nonsense – but I can’t imagine anything better than being able to watch the food cooking directly in the pan and having a short distance from the stove to the plate.

I’m currently in the process of really activating this concept in our home, because our little ones no longer run around and don’t use the “race track” around the island as often. I also enjoy eating while standing or at raised tables, ideally with a direct view of the activity. It’s not for everyone, so design it to suit your own preferences.

Best regards,

Thank you for sharing your experiences!

It seems that we will need to "predict" our usage patterns. Currently, in our apartment, we don’t have this option yet, and honestly, we haven’t really missed it so far. However, that doesn’t mean it has to stay that way, especially since we now have the opportunity to plan for it in our new build. Our children are 6 and 9 years old, and for some time, we will still be regularly sitting together at the dining table.

We will definitely take your experiences into account and then hopefully make the right decision for us.

Here is our layout for the kitchen/dining area provided afterwards (the potential space for the bar stools is marked in green).

Floor plan of an interior space/kitchen area with a green highlighted rectangular object and a red arrow.

That wouldn’t have worked for us, just for aesthetic reasons. I think I’ve rarely seen bar stools that I like, and I find a closed island more attractive. Also, when sitting on those stools, I miss having a backrest. As usual: it’s all a matter of personal taste. If you like it and find the stools comfortable to sit on, I would go ahead with it in your situation.
