ᐅ Looking for manufacturers or catalogs for the front door shown in this picture.

Hello everyone,

Our search for a front door that we like and that fits our budget has been somewhat frustrating.

Basically, we are looking for a door in a country or farmhouse style. The many catalogs I’ve browsed so far mostly offer nearly the same designs. However, we don’t really like any of them.

Therefore, we have already requested custom quotes from carpenters and window manufacturers and even saw a (wood) door once at an exhibition. The prices start at around 5,000€ and go up to 10,000€.

We planned a budget of 3,500€ gross, including installation costs.

We recently found the attached door online from the company Brunkhorst. Unfortunately, they are located far from us in Hamburg (postal code 33***). At this point, the options would be to have the door delivered and installed by someone else. However, this involves the risk of measurement errors on our side. Also, it is a wooden door, which is not bad in principle, but with the gable side facing south, the door would be exposed to weather all day. I was told that this is not ideal for wooden doors.

My request is whether you could check any catalogs you currently have access to and see if you recognize this door from the photo in a catalog and could provide the names of the suppliers. The door panels could then be ordered and installed locally by a company into a door frame.

I hope this will bring together some useful information. Thank you very much.

Door panels are not always sourced from suppliers – it’s just that many manufacturers prefer to buy this part in.

Wood is wood, and there is no substitute. What you see in the photo can only be achieved with wood. You can stick molding strips onto a plastic door, but it’s not the same. Ultimately, only you can decide what looks good enough for you.

Ideally, I would say: “go to a joiner – they appreciate a demanding project once in a while” – but unfortunately, joiners (although they would actually be my first choice for the door here) are often not well-versed in locking, fitting, and hardware technology. That’s why I mention Pax. They can even handle turned elements for heritage building components.

Of course, you can also combine: a standard plastic door with panels made by the local joiner.

It can’t be helped. If the door is the issue, talk to Brunkhorst about how he builds it. Sun exposure is brutal on any paint. Even the long-oil turpentine-based paints used in boatbuilding only last a few years on it. And the two-component (2K) products don’t work on solid wood, only on plywood. However, that’s not how the door appears. He might be coating it with foil! Then it would work. As I said, communicate with each other. Karsten

So what happens in the end? Is it enough if we repaint every 5 years? Should we sand off the old paint beforehand? Or are we also talking about structural damage here?

If it’s "just" repainting every 5 years, we could live with that.

What happens? Initially, nothing to the wood unless it is constantly damp and unprotected. The varnish becomes thin, cracked, and flakes off due to UV radiation. The only solution is sanding, dusting, and varnishing again. Long-oil varnishes are best. Search for Epifanes—they are, in my opinion, the benchmark for wood varnishes, including suitability for tropical climates. Not exactly cheap. But what is $10 more for several years of additional durability? However, even Epifanes eventually deteriorates under sunlight. That’s just how it is.

Thank you for pointing that out.
Today, I paid close attention at an exhibition and you were absolutely right (at least with this manufacturer (KompoTherm)).

From the manufacturer Brunkhorst regarding the door shown in the picture, I received the following statement:

"You don’t need to worry about this. If you maintain the door once a year with a care product—about 10 minutes of work—you will have a beautiful door for many years.
A care guide is included with the delivery of the door.

If after many years the door becomes unattractive, a light sanding and a single coat of renovation paint will be enough.

Material damage can be ruled out."

Of course, they want to make a sale, but if country house style is limited to wood, then we hardly have a choice, because a modern door like this wouldn’t fit with the rest of the house.

You like them, don’t you? So take them, you won’t find any others. Bet? Sometimes you have to follow your heart. Karsten
