is there a formula to calculate the length of a diagonal brace? I have a crossbeam (14cm x 24cm (5.5in x 9.5in)) that spans a distance of 5.55 meters (18.2 feet) between the posts (measured from inside edge to inside edge). How can I calculate the length or size of the diagonal brace to brace at least this beam in one direction?

A structural engineer can help you.
They will consider whether it is a solid construction, timber frame, prefabricated house, garden shed,
the load on the crossbeam, ceiling load, etc.
A strut braces a structure, reducing the beam’s deflection, and should always be installed in pairs.
So it is important and cannot just be estimated.
