Hello,

I am currently working on building my terrace. The terrace will be laid on a mortar bed. The terrace slabs end 1cm (0.4 inches) below the house foundation. Since the house is timber frame construction, I would like to additionally protect the foundation area to prevent moisture from rising.

I have asked several sources and was always told that I don’t need to do anything because the terrace is still below the foundation level and slopes away from the house. Only if the terrace were higher and ended at the plaster would I need to take specific waterproofing measures.

What is your opinion on this?

Best regards,
Micha

A slope is definitely good. However, I wouldn't like it either. We did it this way.
Paved courtyard next to white house, door at the end, side wall lamp, retaining wall on the right.

We left a gravel strip. Karsten

I have also considered the gravel strip. But as you can see in my picture, there is already concrete there. If I leave it as it is and rainwater flows into the gravel strip, the concrete could suffer frost damage.

What does it look like under the gravel strip on your side?

Sand, drainage, and a weed control fabric.
In your case, is it already too late without using a rotary hammer? Bituminous waterproofing coating on the base?

Yes, unfortunately, it’s already too late for that. There is already a bitumen coating applied. I was also considering adding a bitumen strip on top of it.

How does this type of facade waterproofing work in cases where the terrace would end higher than the plaster?

I don’t know.
If there is bitumen applied on it, then it is sealed.
