Hello everyone,

When our basement walls were being formed, an opening for the heat pump’s air outlet was forgotten. This opening was later cut out of the reinforced concrete (waterproof concrete). Now, the cut edges of the steel reinforcement are visible. The exhaust grille of the heat pump is installed in the opening. Is it safe to leave it like this, or should the cut edges be sealed to protect them from corrosion? If so, what would be the best sealant to use?

Thank you all!

Hello Stifty,
basically, the steel wouldn’t be damaged. However, to avoid unsightly rust stains, it is recommended to protect it with rust-preventive paint (available at hardware stores). Apply it with a small brush in dabbing motions, twice in total.
In principle, though, this is a poor job by your builder. They are obligated to fix this defect at their own expense. The decision is yours.
