Hello everyone! I am planning to secure the top surface, the top panel, of my IKEA KALLAX shelf with screws to increase stability. My specific question is: can this thin top panel of the KALLAX shelf withstand repeated tightening of screws without splitting or cracking?

I do not want to use metal brackets but screw directly into the panel. Does anyone have experience or technical advice on the best way to do this without damaging the panel? I know that KALLAX uses MDF or particleboard, but how durable is this top panel really for such fastenings? Thanks in advance for your opinions and experiences!

The panel from the KALLAX is quite thin, but it can hold screws if you handle it carefully. Important: screw in slowly and pre-drill. Otherwise, it splinters easily.

Basically, the KALLAX top panel is made of particleboard or MDF with a thin veneer layer. These materials are not designed to withstand permanent and heavy loads from screws.

Tightening screws without pre-drilling often causes damage to the material. I strongly recommend pre-drilling the screws before driving them in and using washers to distribute the pressure on the surface. Additionally, screws should not be tightened too deeply, as this can cause the material to split.

Hello leosan5! Your question is very valid, as many KALLAX users want to improve the shelf’s stability through their own modifications.

Regarding the top panel: it has a thinner material thickness than the side panels and is actually somewhat more sensitive to direct screw connections. My advice is to use appropriate dowels and pre-drill holes, tightening the screws only by hand to avoid overstressing the material.

Alternatively, you could consider installing additional cross braces underneath the panel, for example, screwed into the sides rather than directly into the panel itself. This way, you increase stability without permanently weakening the panel.

Thanks for this advice; it already gave me a clear direction.

That’s a good tip – I had considered pre-drilling, but wouldn’t have thought of washers. Is this really recommended to prevent the material from cracking on the surface?

That’s definitely something to consider. Great, thanks for the detailed response.

Pre-drilling is essential. Insert screws carefully, otherwise the panel may crack. If possible, use only light support fastenings, not heavy loads.
