Hello everyone, I would like to do some of the work myself (preparation for façade renovation) by removing my old 5 cm (2 inch) EPS insulation, which is plastered and embedded in an old "Hasen?" metal mesh. Has anyone done something like this before? Which tools are best suited for this? The wall underneath is brick, so I find an angle grinder or rotary hammer too risky. Maybe an angle grinder with a steel or wire brush? Thanks and best regards

I don’t know the exact composition of the adhesive, but it is likely cement-based with many chemicals. In my opinion, the surface is too uneven to simply apply something loosely on top. I would level it with a thin layer of plaster or reattach something using adhesive.

Hm, over the entire facade area of 150m2 (1,615 sq ft)? That would mean spraying the plaster, and quite a lot of it, even with a 5mm (0.2 inch) leveling layer. Is it worth it?

It should also be possible to taper it. However, that would certainly involve a lot of work.

How thick should the new insulation layer be? Reducing a 6cm (2.5 inches) insulation layer by 2cm (0.8 inches) has a greater impact than reducing a 16cm (6.3 inches) layer by the same 2cm (0.8 inches). Try experimenting with a U-value calculator.

So, the insulation is 2 x 10 cm (4 x 4 inches). The adhesive residue is at most 3–5 mm (0.1–0.2 inches) thick. If this does not create a chimney effect, it can hopefully be disregarded. The joints between the bricks are also not perfectly even.

So, a total of 20cm (8 inches)? Then I wouldn’t worry about it. Lack of ventilation would definitely be a critical mistake. Are you doing anything related to airtightness as part of the work? The plaster won’t provide that anymore.
