Hello everyone,
we are currently in the middle of planning our single-family home. Originally, the plan was to create a wellness area in the basement with a sauna, shower/toilet, and a relaxation zone.
Our architect has now advised us to also consider the option of integrating the sauna into the main bathroom. That way, we would have a 25m² (270 sq ft) bathroom upstairs with a whirlpool bathtub, sauna, double sink, and a walk-in shower (the toilet would be separate, adjacent to it).
I would appreciate hearing about your experiences regarding where you placed the sauna in your home, whether you would do it the same way again, and if you actually use the area regularly.
Looking forward to your feedback.

Costruttrice20 Nov 2023 14:04We faced the same decision and chose to install the sauna in the upstairs bathroom. It will be installed soon, so I can’t share any experiences yet. I believe we will use the sauna more often this way because everything is together, the bathroom is already heated, and I don’t have to prepare everything down in the basement first. Also, there’s no need to clean an additional corridor by the sauna.
We also have a separate master area where we can relax in the bedroom and enjoy a private balcony. We don’t plan to use the sauna with friends; children are welcome but only on their own. We want to keep the sauna as a family space, so it doesn’t need to be centrally located.
Many friends installed their saunas later on, usually in the basement. Few people spontaneously decide to sauna in the evening because the basement has to be heated first.

Plus, there’s no extra area to clean around the sauna 😉 .
However, we also have a separate parents’ area where we can relax in the bedroom and step out onto a private balcony. We don’t plan to use the sauna with friends; children are welcome but only alone. For us, it should remain a family sauna, so it doesn’t need to be centrally located.
Many of our friends installed their saunas later on in the basement. Most of them don’t use it spontaneously in the evenings because you have to heat the basement first. Thank you very much for sharing your experience. Would it be possible to see the layout of your upstairs? Our plan is similar, with a walk-out balcony from the bedroom 🙂

If possible, incorporate it into the bathroom. It can become a nice wellness area. Who wants to shuffle around in the dark basements? Possibly past clutter. Cold shower down in the basement or back up to the bathroom? Thank you very much for your experience. I am also glad right now that the architect brought up this change and that we were open to it.
Hello, have you considered integrating the sauna into the garden area and setting up some wellness features around it? I enjoy lying in the dark in my barrel sauna (made of Canadian cedar, mmmhhhmm ;-) and looking out at the (lit) surroundings in the evening. However, it is also completely silent there. I didn’t have enough space inside though. But this also helps avoid the typical structural hazards associated with a hot and humid sauna...

For the upcoming summer, I plan to add some landscaping around it as well as an outdoor shower.

May I see the floor plan of your upper floor?I haven’t shared it here yet and unfortunately won’t be sharing it in the future either. There are reasons beyond this forum... Basically, one long side of the house is separated as the parents’ area. From the hallway, you enter a walk-in closet through a door, which leads on one side to the bedroom and on the other side to the bathroom. The balcony is essentially recessed into the roof.Similar topics
