Hello everyone,

we are currently in the middle of planning our single-family home. Originally, the plan was to create a wellness area in the basement with a sauna, shower/toilet, and a relaxation zone.
Our architect has now advised us to also consider the option of integrating the sauna into the main bathroom. That way, we would have a 25m² (270 sq ft) bathroom upstairs with a whirlpool bathtub, sauna, double sink, and a walk-in shower (the toilet would be separate, adjacent to it).
I would appreciate hearing about your experiences regarding where you placed the sauna in your home, whether you would do it the same way again, and if you actually use the area regularly.

Looking forward to your feedback.

That depends on the space available in the floor plan.
We initially removed the lounge chairs by the sauna; instead, the living room is furnished with relaxation furniture, including music, a mini fridge, and a fruit plate.
If you are young and fit, a basement sauna is a good option.
In our case, we left a placeholder in the basement measuring 2.5 x 2.5 m (8.2 x 8.2 ft), without a basement window in that area, and installed the sauna there 2–3 years later.
In the second planning phase, it came down to centimeters on the ground floor.

Thank you very much for the picture and the explanations.
Since we are still in the planning phase, the floor plan remains flexible. In the current version, there is enough space for a sauna both on the upper floor and in the basement, as the total floor area is quite large.

Report from the family home: We used to have the sauna in the basement. It was spacious and there was plenty of room. You could have fun sauna parties with friends. But in my opinion, it wasn’t very cozy. The basement is dark, and for relaxing, I find it nicer to have daylight. Now we have the sauna in the attic. That’s really nice. In front of the sauna room, we have a seating area by the window, a full bathroom next to it, and anyone who wants can also lie down. But most of the time, we sit by the window in our bathrobes and chat.

But in my opinion, it wasn’t really cozy. Basements are dark, and I find it more relaxing to have natural daylight. Now we have the sauna in the attic. That is very nice. But most of the time we just sit in our bathrobes by the window and chat.

Thank you very much for sharing your experience. We are currently planning two full floors with a large footprint plus a basement. Our preferred roof style would be a tent roof/hip roof, so there will be no attic level.
What bothers us about our current house is that we have four levels (basement, ground floor, upper floor, attic), which is why we are planning a larger footprint and one less floor.
Based on your description, though, a wellness area in the attic sounds very appealing.

The picture should show that a basement sauna can be a simple wooden box with a glass panel in the door (an inexpensive, standard option). The sauna in the living area, however, is a bathroom fixture and must be very well planned. The interior cladding is Canadian cedar, and the smell is really nice. 🙂

The sauna in the living area, however, is part of the bathroom furniture and needs to be very well designed.
The interior cladding is Canadian cedar, and the smell is, well, 🙂

So, we want an attractive and high-quality sauna no matter where it is ultimately located ;-)

If possible, integrate it into the bathroom. It can become a nice wellness oasis. Who wants to shuffle around in dark basements? Possibly past clutter. Cold showers then in the basement or back upstairs to the bathroom?
