ᐅ Satellite System in New Construction: Unicable or Star Wiring?

Hello,

I am currently building a new house and wanted to ask whether I should go with the standard star wiring or the Unicable system. There are a total of 8 outlets, but only up to 4 will be used at the same time. Only one satellite is to be received.

I would recommend a Unicable solution with star wiring.
So:
- Satellite dish with a Quattro LNB (not Quad LNB!)
- From the LNB, 4 cables to a Unicable multiswitch.
- From the multiswitch, run star-shaped wiring to the rooms.

I already have the prerequisites with my 4 cables from the roof.
And I have also wired all the rooms with LCD115 in a star topology.
However, the Quattro and Quad distinction is quite confusing. :-/

Nowadays, I would install only Sat over IP.

Hmm, well, I don't see many more advantages than feeding it into the LAN and then watching on a tablet. Today, I would still rely on both LAN and coaxial cable. The end was already predicted before I built my house. However, satellite and coax are still very much alive.

Do you think it’s worth it? I assume that within 5 to 10 years at the latest, the satellite dish will be removed from the roof. I see it only as a temporary solution until streaming becomes fully established.

Precisely because it’s uncertain where things are headed, I find the satellite over IP concept interesting. However, it would need to be calculated on a case-by-case basis. It depends on how many TVs and similar devices are going to be used.

If satellite remains, everything can simply stay as it is.
If satellite disappears (due to streaming and the like), you just disconnect the dish and can use the existing wiring. Coaxial cables would have to or could be removed and replaced with LAN. But that would cost more than going with LAN from the start.

I don’t need commercial TV. I admit I like to use the public broadcasting services.

But you can actually watch those quite easily on almost any device, both live and with time-shift, without a traditional TV connection.

The only difference is the (still) slightly better quality of satellite data and the shorter delay.

I would rather say, if you want the commercial channels (for free), you still need satellite. Otherwise, it seems rather unnecessary to me.

It's precisely the "live" part that we’re struggling with. The whole family really enjoys biathlon. Unfortunately, the media library app on my Samsung TV doesn't support live TV :-(
And I’ve already missed several programs afterward because they weren’t available in the media library (although this might also be due to the complicated channel structure of ARD and the poor search function in the TV app).

I will probably never understand why people don’t just spend a few hundred euros to install a satellite dish on the wall or roof, or have it installed.

Instead, they prefer to struggle with half-baked solutions...

Just saying... simply thinking out loud...
