ᐅ Room divider – single-sided or double-sided?

Hello everyone,

I’m currently considering how the room divider could be designed—whether it should be accessible from both sides or just one. I’m thinking of a height of about 1.40 m (4 ft 7 in).

On one side, the TV would be mounted, and on the other side, there would be a bench.

My thoughts:

I’m not sure why, but I feel that with the double-sided accessible option, when I’m watching TV, I might notice more movement in the background, which could be distracting, although it would feel more open.

With the single-sided option, I might have more possibilities for design.

Does anyone have experience with this or any opinions?

Thanks and regards!

PS: I also find the example photo interesting.

My concern is that if I paint one side white, it will get dirty over time because the children often touch it.

You have to worry about that throughout the whole house. Kids constantly touch walls (stairs and doors are especially popular). But there is a solution: repainting 😉
I know how it is with my three kids... It’s not worth overthinking or getting upset about it.

Marble plaster could be the right choice, just need to find someone who can do it well and offers a good price (supposed to be expensive).

@nordanney, I know, but the frequency will be higher at that spot :-).

It looks like this later (also available in other colors, it is a natural stone just a few millimeters thin):

😱 Looks just like our shower!

I like this detail; it gives the room a spacious feel and doesn’t make you feel “boxed in.”

The separation between ceiling and wall at the top basically creates a floating effect, transparency… I can’t find the exact word, but light can continue to spread. You get what I mean 🙂
It looks nice when there is only a narrow strip of light at the top, so the wall can just be a wall, while brightness is allowed through.
However, the posts on the left and right, as well as the size ratio between wall and open space, reduce the effect.
Also, the openings on the left and right give a very different impression than I expected from the topic question about what this is about.
It doesn’t have the spacious effect one might think it would have.
But it’s not my idea that counts, it’s the wishes of the homeowners. The main thing is you are happy…
Regarding the question: I would hang cushions on the wall as backrest padding for the bench.
Coat the wall with latex paint or wallpaper. Both can be easily changed or washed.

I have seen a wall nearby with a "leather wallpaper," I think that's what it's called; it looks stylish.

Addendum: I wouldn’t emphasize the wall with paint or anything like that. Somehow, the different horizontal lines in the room seem a bit too much to me. The kitchen is doubly emphasized, the video area has a different height... the TV also creates its own line...

I don’t want to emphasize it separately; I just want it to fit in the room and be low-maintenance.
