we are currently in the process of purchasing a semi-detached house and have just noticed that on hot days there is an oil smell in the attic. According to the owner, the roof was insulated 1-2 years ago as a DIY project with a friend, using standard roofing felt.
Has anyone had a similar experience? We are considering whether replacing the current wooden ceiling with drywall panels might help keep the smell out of the house. Could that work?
What about the electrical wiring and holes drilled in the ceiling for lights and such? Would the smell still come into the house through these openings? Or do you first need to install an insulating layer beneath the roofing felt, then run the electrical cables, and finally cover everything with drywall panels? How would this affect the ventilation of the house? Wouldn’t that create a ventilation problem?
So many questions
Thanks in advance for your answers!
