Hello everyone,
I urgently need some advice and tips regarding roof insulation.
We plan to have our roof replaced next year. Now, the topic is roof insulation. Our roofer recommended the following:
Polyurethane (PU) rigid foam, 100mm (4 inches) thick // Type: puren Protect N 023.
This would be an insulation installed above the rafters (i.e., external insulation). However, I have read in forums and other sources that sound insulation with this type of material often falls short. The noise level can sometimes be quite high. This is partly due to the boards themselves (as they apparently expand and contract, especially at night) and also because the boards do not provide good soundproofing.
We would really like the space under the roof to be more comfortable in summer and, of course, quieter—or at least that outside noise levels are bearable.
Can you give us advice on the best way to insulate a roof like this? Has anyone had experience with this type: puren Protect N 023?
Please help... THANK YOU!!!
Best regards, Anke

Basically, every insulation material will eventually become hot during summer temperatures, especially when exposed to direct sunlight. The concept of thermal phase shift is about delaying the transfer of heat into the living space until the evening and night hours, when the indoor air and walls can be cooled down again through ventilation. I recommend looking up more information about this online. Therefore, the thermal phase shift should be at least 10 hours or more. Even more important for heat protection is ensuring that windows are shaded, for example, by blinds or shutters.

We have 25cm (10 inches) of Gutex wood fiber insulation on the roof, and the soundproofing is terrible. You can hear everything through the roof as if it weren't there at all. Airplanes are very disturbing; even though they are flying above 5000m (3.1 miles), the whole roof vibrates with a hum.

Good morning...
@ Roof Carpenter,
Thank you for your detailed report... very interesting.
You are absolutely right. All the tradespeople told us to install the exterior (over-rafter) insulation. Additional insulation measures would then not be necessary. But that’s not the case at all. As far as I can tell, you really can’t avoid adding insulation between the rafters. However, roofers NEVER offer that. We were only offered the PU boards "puren Protect N023" and nothing else. From what I have read so far, they are a disaster in terms of sound and thermal insulation.

@ Garfunkel,
Do you have those PU boards with a mineral wool layer? Only 5 cm (2 inches)? That’s really not much, is it? Are you satisfied with the heat protection? So you don’t have any insulation between the rafters either?

@ Bookstar,
You have 25 cm (10 inches) of wood fiber exterior (over-rafter) insulation and the sound insulation is a disaster???
My goodness, what should one finally choose???
How is the heat protection for you?
You probably don’t have any insulation between the rafters either, right???

Thank you all very much!!! You have helped me a lot so far.
Thanks + best regards
Anke

Just from a quick read: Soundproofing and heat insulation are important.
The contractors are right, additional insulation is NOT strictly necessary.
If there is extra budget available, I would add insulation between the rafters and a thin layer beneath the rafters in addition to the above-roof insulation.
I would also place a layer of OSB boards fairly close to the interior side of the room.
When it comes to airborne sound and heat protection, the rule is: mass matters.
This can also be done cost-effectively with DIY work, if possible.

Joe, wouldn’t it be possible to skip the continuous insulation above the rafters and only insulate between or beneath them? After all, it’s an old house, and you’re not turning the Goggo into a Ferrari.

Hello @Joedreck and @Nordlys,

yes, our house is an older building with wooden plank ceilings.
@Joedreck,
Okay, so no further measures besides exterior insulation are really necessary, right?
But for us, it’s not just about thermal insulation, but also about sound and heat protection.
We have been offered 100mm (4 inches) PU foam boards.
Do you think we should also install insulation between the rafters for sound and heat protection? And yes, we are able to do that ourselves.
@Nordlys,
Every roofer we spoke with strongly recommends insulation above the rafters. Everyone suggested this measure to us.
But as I said, we are quite unsure about what is best for heat and sound protection.
Thanks to everyone!
Best regards,
