Dear community,

First of all, I wish you all a Happy New Year – hopefully a successful one!
I have a question regarding the conversion of an attic space.
What approximate cost for raw materials would you expect for the insulation between the rafters of this attic?
-> Floor area: 7 x 11 m = 77 m² (753 sq ft)
-> Area with full standing height: 4 x 11 m = 44 m² (473 sq ft)

I also have a few more questions:

What minimum opening size would you recommend for the stairwell to still consider the stair access comfortable? (Does anyone have knowledge about fire protection regulations?)

Would it be worth installing a suspended ceiling?

What kind of windows and what size would you recommend for plenty of natural light at a reasonable cost?
Are blinds necessary?

Could an expert possibly give me a tip on what type of wood these beams might be? (Construction year around 1956) What should I be aware of regarding this wood?

Many thanks in advance for your answers, tips, questions, and suggestions.

Best regards
Wolfram

All right, thank you for the helpful answer!
Is there a difference in the required renovation concerning living space expansion if the heating systems in the apartments are gas-fired individual heaters?

Kind regards

If this space is going to be used as living area, the 2.50 m (8 feet 2 inches) ceiling height must be maintained, right, or am I confusing something?

Hello,

To my knowledge, more than half of the floor area must have a ceiling height of 2.35 m (7 ft 9 in), depending on the federal state (here we are talking about NRW), in order for it to be converted into living space.

Back to the chimney. Does anyone have any experience with this? Do I have to make any mandatory changes to it if the space is going to be used as living quarters?
(The building has 8 residential units, GAS)

Best regards and thanks for all helpful answers and suggestions

I don’t understand the question and, if I were you, I would ask your chimney sweep.

Hello,

when converting an attic into living space, you will likely need to consider a second emergency escape route, which is now often required.

This could be a window of a specified minimum size in the gable or a special roof window (possibly with additional stepping pads on the roof).

I would clarify this in advance with the responsible building authority.

What is the status of the permit for use as living space?

Regards,

Dirk
