Hello,

I have a question regarding my own project.
What would you recommend as cladding for the fascia board at the roof edge?

We are getting a "modern" gable roof with a 30° pitch and no overhang.
The roof tiles will likely be flat Braas Turmalin in matte anthracite, with verge tiles (half and full) at the edges. The house will have a brick veneer.

The builder plans to install a wooden fascia board at the verge and behind the gutter on the eaves side.
The gutter is external, meaning it will be in front of the brick facing.

Since I do not want to paint the wooden fascia board, I’m looking for durable alternatives.
  • Wood: Needs to be painted
  • Zinc cladding (the fascia board is extensively covered with zinc sheet metal): expensive (the general contractor wants an extra 4,700 € (about $5,100 USD). That’s too much—especially since the zinc sheet starts to corrode at cut edges.
  • Aluminum, stainless steel? More durable material, probably even more expensive
  • Plastic profiles instead of wooden boards: Seems good and affordable. Not my top choice aesthetically, but acceptable. The general contractor is now getting a quote for this.

Have I missed anything?
Should a protective mesh against insects (wasps) and birds also be ordered?
Thanks for your input.

Slate, roof tiles with bargeboard nose, copper.

Flat roofs also do not have eaves...

Copper does not fit the concept or the budget.
Roof tiles have an edge overlap of about 6cm (2.5 inches) over the verge.

Attached is a close-up of the roof edge.

I’m wondering if the wooden board can be omitted with the zinc cladding? So just metal, without the need for elaborate boarding.
Zinc verge flashing doesn’t really cost much; it’s about 7-8 EUR per meter (3.4-4.3 USD per foot).
At the moment, I can’t access the roofing contractor through the main contractor, but I will follow up on that.

The insect screen idea I took from the green forum; it was about small animals like wasps and swallows, etc.
The screen is not a must, but it seemed reasonable, although I personally don’t mind swallows.
