Hello,

we are dreaming of a two-story house with a pyramid roof (see picture).

I would like to know how the costs compare to a standard pitched roof. Are there any other advantages or disadvantages of the pyramid roof design (e.g., wind, rain)? I am aware that the usable attic space is smaller with a pyramid roof.

Two-story white detached house with dark roof, entrance stairs, and garden.

Hello!

We are currently building an urban villa with a pyramid roof.

Advantages:
- Two full stories, no sloped ceilings
- No overheated living spaces under the roof
- Windows on all sides
- No heat load from direct sunlight due to the continuous roof overhang
- Visually very appealing

Disadvantages:
- Slightly more expensive (comparison is difficult because a gable roof house with the same floor plan naturally has significantly less living space)
- Standing height in the attic is rather low, especially when insulating the upper floor ceiling

In hindsight, I would at least consider a house with a single-pitch roof. The appearance is not as attractive but it should be considerably cheaper.

Best regards,
Tom.

Hello!

As an architect, I hear this question quite often. Tom Tom is right—the main advantage of a pyramid roof is that it allows for two full stories. Once there is a pitched roof, you often face challenges with furnishing and so on (not to mention how much less space you have).

I found an article about the gable roof for you here; I hope it helps.
