ᐅ Roller shutters or blinds on the ground floor

Hello everyone,

We are currently wondering:

Should we install blinds or roller shutters on the floor-to-ceiling windows on the ground floor (patio exit, etc.)? In any case, they should be electric.

I honestly don’t see much added value in blinds, especially since I would even have to pay extra for them, which still doesn’t make sense to me.

Recently, we drove through two new housing developments, and really about 80% of the houses have blinds?? What do you think about this?

I just can’t believe it, but of course, this also raises the question: Are we thinking about this the wrong way? Are blinds maybe actually better?

Added value: You can control the appearance and the amount of light coming in. But otherwise, I don’t see any benefit, and I’m supposed to pay extra for that?

In my opinion, the disadvantages clearly outweigh the advantages...

It’s quite simple: If you want shading, light control, and the ability to look outside, go for venetian blinds (Raffstores). Otherwise, roller shutters are the way to go. Both systems are well-developed and practical. We have neither.

Addendum: If you want shading, light, outside views, and a look that doesn’t make you feel like you’re peering out of a prison cell (which was our reason for rejecting venetian blinds, since their interior appearance isn’t very nice—enough for me that I have to see it all the time in the office): build a nice canopy over the main window front with a retractable awning underneath… -> No direct sunlight, unobstructed views, natural light, and no issues with wind (except during severe storms, of course)…

I have a question about roller shutters.

We installed roller shutters throughout the upper floor. However, when closing them, they don’t fully reach the windowsill but stop earlier due to the angle in the guide rails. These are positioned above the windowsill.

As a result, it doesn’t get completely dark. It doesn’t bother me much, but our kids would prefer it to be completely dark when they sleep.

Is there any specific reason for this, or could the stops be unscrewed so that the shutters can close all the way down?

That doesn't make much sense to me at first. You could send a photo. But without guarantee, it sounds like your supplier cut the guide rails too short and installed the stoppers because of that. If the shutter didn't stop there, the individual slats would come out of the guide. Normally, a roller shutter closes completely.

Blinds or roller shutters

Butcher or meat cutter, Weckla or Rundstück – where do you see the difference? – Isn’t it just that on the French side of the Rhine they say it differently but mean the same as on the Prussian side?

A well-positioned 60cm (24 inches) roof overhang on the single-story south-facing facade provides sufficient shade and forest-cooled air that flows through the house when the doors are open.
