Hello everyone,

We are currently wondering:

Should we install blinds or roller shutters on the floor-to-ceiling windows on the ground floor (patio exit, etc.)? In any case, they should be electric.

I honestly don’t see much added value in blinds, especially since I would even have to pay extra for them, which still doesn’t make sense to me.

Recently, we drove through two new housing developments, and really about 80% of the houses have blinds?? What do you think about this?

I just can’t believe it, but of course, this also raises the question: Are we thinking about this the wrong way? Are blinds maybe actually better?

Added value: You can control the appearance and the amount of light coming in. But otherwise, I don’t see any benefit, and I’m supposed to pay extra for that?

In my opinion, the disadvantages clearly outweigh the advantages...

Imagine that now with blackout blinds
Just try to imagine it completely without anything.
We also have a south-facing orientation, and we have never lowered the blinds in our rental apartment!

When it gets above 30°C (86°F) in the attic apartment, all the windows are simply opened at night.

Facade slats have a strong impact on the overall design of the house. The entire building has to match them.

Neighbors have shutters in a modern style. Not suitable. These can only be adjusted vertically to control how much the window is closed. Visually great and they fit really well, but not practical.
I don’t agree. Shutters are very practical. You can close them to keep the interior cool while still allowing light in. In the evening, cool air can come through, and nobody can see that the windows are open. Also, they open and close very quickly.

I have used roller blinds, venetian blinds (also called horizontal blinds), and shutters. I have to say I like shutters best. Only downside is that they are not compatible with smart home systems and can be tricky to arrange around windows.

Venetian blinds are also good because you can look outside even when they are closed.

I wouldn’t turn it off. There is nothing better for me than a cool apartment when the outside temperature is around 30°C (86°F).

These are simply not smart home capable.
You must be referring to the basic setups that are hyped as smart homes in the media. They can’t control simple things like shutters because there’s no additional module available for that.

In a real smart home environment, of course, you can automate shutters as well.
