ᐅ Roller Shutters and Venetian Blinds in Anthracite – What Are the Disadvantages?

Hello everyone,

we are currently building a single-family home and are now considering the color of the external blinds and roller shutters. On the ground floor, we have external blinds, and on the upper floor, regular roller shutters. We really like the idea of having both the roller shutters and external blinds in anthracite. However, we often read about the significant heat buildup between the window and the roller shutter when anthracite is used. In some cases, it is even said that this could damage the windows and cause the roller shutters to warp.

Do you have any experience with this? Are there any other disadvantages?

Thank you very much for your opinions and experiences.

As long as the dark area is in front of the panes, it is not critical; most of the heat stays outside—even if the material’s temperature rises by a few degrees. It becomes critical when the sun heats up an intermediate space behind the glass, facing a dark surface, as this can create potentially damaging heat buildup. I wouldn’t worry about it.

I am currently facing the same question as @ScubaDiver.
It would also be interesting to know whether it is better to choose aluminum instead of plastic specifically for anthracite-colored roller shutters. I could imagine that aluminum is somewhat more heat-resistant than plastic.

Both materials are available in sufficiently heat-resistant versions.

Yes and no. Plastics are generally less resistant to aging than metal, and extreme temperatures along with dimensional changes accelerate their aging process.

I don’t find the interior very appealing because you are always facing such a large, very dark surface.

We have dark external venetian blinds and can so far only report from these first few really warm days of the year.

First of all, I can say that they really help. It even feels like they work best when the slats are about 50% open—that is, horizontal. This way, you can still enjoy a good view outside. Obviously, the house still heats up, which is expected, but since we have a full south-facing orientation with very large windows, it remains comfortably cool by comparison.

Regarding the color, we have no basis for comparison. Ours is RAL 9007, aluminum gray. However, I don’t think it would make much difference. So far, we haven’t noticed any cracking or similar issues. But as mentioned, this is our first year in the house.
