Dear smart home experts,

We are currently working on the electrical installation and would like to install flush-mounted smart home switches on the ground floor and most of the upper floor. Our family uses the Homematic system, but the external additional module is a drawback. We want to avoid using that.

We will also have additional rocker switches (open/close) in the rooms. Still, we want to use the exposed walls to enable smart home control for the roller shutters without major extras.

When searching on Google, the finesell SmartHome roller shutter module 4-pack for €99.99 is regularly shown. It can be used without an external additional module and works with apps such as SmartLife.

Questions:
1. What do you think about this offered set and the app?
2. Are there any worthwhile alternatives?
3. How do you assess the SmartLife app?
4. How does the pairing process work?
5. Integration with Apple HomeKit is probably not possible (but also not a requirement)?

Hopefully, you can shed some light on this.

Best regards!

@netuser: Thank you for the additional information.

As a layperson, I take away the following: the base station is absolutely necessary, good Wi-Fi is a prerequisite.

Wi-Fi is not necessarily a requirement, since the base station can also be connected to the network via cable and communicates with the devices within the system using 868 MHz radio without Wi-Fi.

The pairing process was clearly visible in some videos. What are your experiences regarding failures, i.e. do some roller shutters sometimes fail to close? Do you sometimes have to re-pair individual controls?

Actually, it happened once within a year that I had to re-pair two devices at the same time. Whether an update caused this or what the exact reason was, I couldn’t determine. By the way, this only affected HomeKit; the devices still worked within the Bosch app. It was resolved in just a few minutes (re-added) and wasn’t a major concern or source of dissatisfaction for me, as everything else has been reliable and trouble-free.

Switches: As far as I can tell, with the Bosch flush-mount control combined with the S55 system plus adapter, a “normal” rocker switch is intended—basically like a light switch with a short press to raise and a long press for individual settings? So not the “typical” roller shutter switches like in the S55 system (item no.: 029403). Is it similar for you, and what are your experiences?

I don’t have direct experience with S55, but the principle is basically the same. Yes, switches turn into rocker switches. Meanwhile, Bosch also offers flush-mounted actuators similar to Shelly devices or the ones you mentioned from finesell, so that switches can remain as traditional switches... We are happy with the rocker switches and mostly control everything via app or voice commands anyway—like "Roller shutter on the ground floor 20%" or something similar.

Originally (about 1.5 years ago), I wanted to use the Eltako series 64, which still hasn’t come to market more than 2 years after its announcement. So I ultimately switched to Bosch and have not regretted it so far.

Thank you @netuser and also for the additional advice. I will pass on the Bosch system to the electrician, and if he considers it suitable, we will proceed with the installation.

Any further experiences or suggestions are welcome, and I might get back in touch.

Hello! There is a new idea from an acquaintance. He recommended coqon and their technology, which is installed mostly by electricians.

Do you have any experience with this? Has the company been around for a long time, and does it look like their technology will be supported in the future? I’m not entirely sure yet if any kind of license is required for the standard components.

The accessories looked quite interesting, especially for integrating underfloor heating into a smart home system.

Best regards!

I have never heard of that company before.

I would first check out comexio; they replicate the Loxone system.

The forum search here has only returned two results. Hmm. Maybe someone knows more details...

The decision has not been made yet, and I have further questions regarding the possible systems:

1. For Bosch, for example, there is a risk that the system might no longer be supported by the manufacturer because it gets discontinued. What would be the worst possible consequences in that case?
2. Is remote access to the Bosch system possible, for example from vacation?
3. What options are there that should work reliably and continuously without major issues? This was not entirely clear to me from the discussion here.
4. Homematic IP is at least a better-known provider in this region because it is installed more often. What are your experiences with it in this regard?

Thank you very much for your help with the decision-making process. As a non-professional, I find this quite challenging.

Best regards!
