Hello,
we have exterior roller shutters that are operated from the inside.
The larger windows, which are 3 meters (10 feet) wide, make a lot of noise when the shutters are raised or lowered. For the 1-meter (3 feet) wide windows, the noise is much less noticeable. I looked inside one of the shutter boxes, and there isn’t much to it. According to the general contractor, it is insulated for thermal purposes, but I think the sound insulation is basically zero.
When I look at shutter boxes online, some of them seem to have an additional foam lining on the inside.
How is it for you? Can you hear the shutters inside the house, and how effective is the sound insulation of your shutter boxes?

No, we clearly hear the motor on our side, but we don't notice any rattling of the roller shutter, if it’s even there at all.
To me, the roller shutter box seems very sparse on the inside. It is only lined with wood internally. When I look online, the boxes also appear to have some kind of foam insulation inside.

The roller shutter is heavier when the window is wider. The motor then has to work harder, and the weight-related forces on the "deflection" of the shaft are also greater. Overall, the wider roller shutter will run somewhat less smoothly. There is less noise insulation when the window is taller, meaning more material has to be rolled up, assuming the wall thickness and thus the box depth remain the same. In my view, these are all effects that are hardly avoidable—except possibly by investing more in specially quieter drives for wider and/or taller roller shutters.
