Hello everyone,
I am considering upgrading the feet of my IKEA KALLAX shelf to improve its stability and overall sturdiness. The original feet or foot modules feel a bit too wobbly to me, especially under heavier loads or when the shelf is used as a room divider. My question to the community is:

What sturdier alternatives for upgrading the KALLAX feet do you know of that not only increase stability but also offer good aesthetics and ease of installation?

It is important to me that the alternatives change the shelf height as little as possible and can be securely attached without weakening or damaging the shelf structure. Has anyone had experience with metal brackets, specialized furniture feet, or custom adjustable solutions?

I look forward to practical tips, personal experiences, or recommendations for high-quality third-party components you can suggest.

Interesting question, fezar4!
However, I have to admit that I think all the retrofitting with KALLAX legs is a bit overrated. Sure, the original legs are not the most robust, but let’s be honest: most users hardly ever put that much strain on the shelf at home.

I wonder what exactly these ‘heavier loads’ are. If it’s just a regular living room shelf, the original base rails should actually be sufficient.

But to answer your question: If you really want something more stable, you could go for sturdy metal furniture legs, like those used for workbenches or industrial shelving. These can often be mounted with screws, but they do add some height to the shelf – something to keep in mind.

My tip: Also consider whether additional wall mounting might provide better overall stability instead of just changing the legs. Changing legs alone doesn’t always solve all issues.

Hello fezar4,
your description really resonates with me. I also have a KALLAX shelf, and for a long time, I felt that the feet simply weren’t suitable for the weight I placed on it. It’s frustrating when you can’t achieve a wobble-free result—especially when using the shelf as a room divider or to store delicate items.

That’s true, of course, but often you want to interact with a shelf like this because you appreciate the possibility to position it flexibly. I didn’t really want to drill or fix it permanently either.

At some point, I tried steel furniture legs which can be firmly attached and lift the shelf slightly off the floor. This significantly reduces wobbling, especially on uneven floors. The height difference is minimal, as there are quite flat options available.

Maybe a four-legged system for furniture that can be screwed under the corners could also help you? It provides a larger surface area to stand on and stabilizes well. Installation was quite straightforward for me, even as someone without much DIY experience 🙂

Hello everyone,

To contribute to the discussion with some factual information: The KALLAX feet were originally designed primarily for aesthetic enhancement rather than as load-bearing elements with high stability. For more demanding requirements or room divider-specific load situations, I recommend the following approach:

1. Use feet with a metal core: There are various manufacturers offering furniture feet made from solid steel or aluminum, known for their high load capacity. It is important to secure them well to the corners or sides of the KALLAX.

2. Consider large-area floor supports: Instead of narrow feet, stable floor supports can be mounted that rest on a larger surface area, thus distributing the load more effectively.

3. Combine with wall or ceiling fixation: Even the best feet cannot prevent a tall shelf from tipping. Therefore, for larger constructions, at least one fixation to the wall should be considered.

I installed suitable stainless steel feet that support slightly more than 20 kg (44 lbs) each but raise the shelf only minimally. The installation was straightforward with good drill bits and a few screws. I can gladly provide a more detailed product recommendation if there is interest.

Hello everyone,

I can add to this from my own experience. I had a similar situation to fezar4: I needed a solution for greater stability for my KALLAX, especially since I use it as a room divider and sometimes place heavier loads on it. It was important to me that the feet wouldn’t spoil the style and that the appearance would remain attractive.

I can only confirm that. I bought sturdy furniture feet with a wide base from a hardware store, usually used for cabinets under kitchen counters. They screw in easily and have a rubber pad underneath to protect the floor.

Regarding your question, fezar4: Another option is furniture casters with a locking brake. These usually add a bit of height but offer flexibility in positioning and very good stability when the brake is engaged.

My tip: Also take a look at feet made by manufacturers who specialize in heavy-duty shelving or retail fixtures. Not all are expensive, and depending on the design, you can achieve significantly more stability.
