Hello everyone, I am currently considering whether it is worth retrofitting original door inserts from IKEA for my KALLAX shelving unit or if it would be better to build them myself. My main concerns are the fit, the appearance, and, of course, the durability of the doors under normal use.

The original door modules are well-made but quite expensive, and sometimes I can’t find the right color or material option. On the other hand, building your own doors offers a lot of flexibility but requires time, craftsmanship skills, and precision can be challenging.

Which approach would you choose, and what are your experiences? I am especially interested in how well self-made doors hold up in terms of fit and durability, particularly if you’re not an experienced DIYer.

Thanks for your opinions and tips!

Hello LOPIN43,

I can well understand your considerations, as the retrofit market for KALLAX doors certainly has two sides. First, I want to address the original IKEA door inserts. These are industrially manufactured with precision; the plastic or wood decors fit perfectly into the system, and the locking and hinge mechanisms correspond to the intended load parameters. This generally makes installation quite straightforward, and the doors operate accurately without play.

A major advantage is compatibility: since the measurements are precise down to the millimeter, you don’t need to do much measuring or adjusting. If you plan to sell these doors later, they also retain their value because they are standard accessories.

As for the drawbacks: visually, you are limited to the predefined design, so no custom material combinations like solid wood or metal frames. The doors are also not necessarily high-quality in terms of material thickness or having a durable surface if used very intensively.

Regarding DIY: this can be a great solution if you work with real wood panels, plywood, or MDF and can cut them accordingly. With careful planning and good hinges (e.g., concealed hinges with soft-close), you can achieve a great look and feel that IKEA cannot offer. However, you need to be very precise here, as even small deviations can lead to poor functionality.

The challenge with DIY is definitely dimensional accuracy. KALLAX shelves have relatively thin partitions, so you require millimeter-precise door leaves with exact hinge fittings. Therefore, I would recommend building a prototype door leaf first before making all the doors.

One more tip: if you decide on DIY, be sure to pay attention to gluing and surface treatment, as untreated wood can warp due to moisture and temperature changes.

I would be interested to know whether you plan to attach the doors using hinges on the outside or prefer to work with recesses? This significantly affects stability and aesthetics.

Looking forward to your response!

For me, that is the most important argument. If you don’t have time or experience, go with the originals. They simply fit better and save you from needing modifications.

Additional information: The original KALLAX doors have a thin hardboard panel on the inside with a melamine coating, which provides a smooth surface but also limits flexibility. The hinges are clip hinges, which are easy to install and adjust.

A DIY build only makes sense if you have either high-quality materials and precise tools available or if you are aiming for specific looks or material thicknesses for your shelf. Otherwise, the time investment and potential for errors can be counterproductive.

Regarding stability: original doors are designed for light to moderate loads; with a DIY build, you might achieve greater stability through material thickness, but the shelf must also be able to support the additional weight. The hinge holes require a drilling jig or template to ensure proper installation.

Conclusion: For standard applications, I recommend using the originals; for special requirements, a DIY approach is suitable if you are confident in your care and tools.

I built my own KALLAX doors and I’m really happy with them! 🙂

At first, I thought the originals would definitely be easier, but making them myself offers so many more possibilities, especially when it comes to color and material! I used real wood panels, which I oiled, and the result looks really elegant.

You have to measure very carefully, and yes, installing the hinges was a bit tricky, but the YouTube tutorials helped a lot.

What mattered most to me was stability and, above all, a unique look—I don’t regret it at all. Plus, it’s fun to customize!

Just give it a try, and if it doesn’t work out, you can always get the originals. Good luck!!

What kind of hinges did you use? Are the original IKEA hinges compatible with custom-made doors?

Sounds interesting, I’ve been thinking about trying that too.
