Hello,

I have a Vaillant RecoVair ventilation system, a Bora cooktop with exhaust, and I want to install a fireplace in the living room. I have a fresh air supply connected through the floor slab, so external air intake.

My question is, is it possible to modify a standard fireplace to operate independently of the room air, using only the external air supply?

Thank you,

Erik

And would it be acceptable if the mechanical ventilation is turned off? And what about the exhaust air from the cooktop?

You will still need a window contact switch that allows the hood to operate only when the window is open.

However, the shutdown for the ventilation system must work automatically. You might forget to do it yourself, and in an emergency, you would only be able to leave the house horizontally.

Some people in the forum have already mentioned that their chimney sweep didn’t require all of this, so you should book the chimney sweep first.

In our case, it was the same—only approval with a certified chimney and pressure monitor.

It doesn’t cost just €500, and it’s hardly possible to install it afterward unless you run the cables through half the house…

You are all probably right... we are likely taking this too lightly... I will ask my chimney sweep, and I can keep you updated on what comes of it...

I’m also waiting for feedback from my chimney specialist...

Here is what was sufficient for us. However, we only have a recirculating hood.

Certified chimney
CO detector
We have a 110mm (4.3 inches) duct from the house to the garage that allows air to circulate. This way, it is not possible for the system to create a negative pressure because it has access to outside air through the garage.
