Hello everyone!

My question doesn’t quite fit here, since we bought a finished house and now want to retrofit blinds. I hope it’s still okay to ask here.

My problem is that every supplier I contact only works with one manufacturer. Our preferred supplier, for example, works with Roma. However, I don’t like either the round or the pentagonal boxes, and the supplier says that no one uses the rectangular ones anymore. I actually find the rectangular ones the most suitable for our town villa, but I’ll take their word for it. When I search online, I often see pictures of very compact boxes that fit exactly inside the window recess. For us, these would protrude from the facade and also overlap the window, so we would probably have to mount the Roma boxes on the facade. I’m wondering if there are manufacturers that offer smaller boxes than Roma, which might fit into our window recesses. Does anyone have experience with different manufacturers and can give me a recommendation?

We would actually like to retrofit venetian blinds on the ground floor, but because of these large boxes, I’m not comfortable with that. So if anyone has tips regarding venetian blinds, I’d be happy to hear them too.

Thanks in advance and best regards!

If I understand correctly, the house has windows completely without any shading, meaning neither blinds nor external venetian blinds?

A roller shutter box has to be installed somewhere, which means the rolled-up blind must fit inside. The dimensions of the box require space, both in height and depth.

If installed within the window reveal, this practically means new windows.

What was used fifty years ago to retrofit older buildings (originally without roller shutter boxes because of shutters) would theoretically still look just as unattractive today. The only difference is that the front/external side is now made semi-circular.

It’s obviously frustrating that the boxes were forgotten here. We have external venetian blinds from Reflexa; according to the catalogue, rectangular boxes are available. However, the boxes can also always be custom-built separately, exactly according to one’s preferences.

I would carefully consider whether there are better alternatives to retrofitting roller shutters. The roller shutter boxes need to be installed somewhere, and they won’t fit into the reveal, as @11ant described, and the result never looks good. Additionally, there can be several issues with installation and sealing; water may collect on the box, the window sills might no longer fit properly – in other words, there are also technical risks that I would prefer to avoid in a new build.

Hello, I come from the sun protection industry. Depending on what you want to achieve, there are different products available. Personally, for my house, I will use vertical awnings with a ZIP system and transparent fabric. The advantage is a small cassette, very wind-resistant thanks to the ZIP system, and visually stunning and elegant. You can also choose from many colors.
