Hello everyone, I am planning to install doors on my IKEA KALLAX shelf unit. My question is: Do you need any special tools for retrofitting the KALLAX doors beyond standard tools like screwdrivers and a drill?

I already have some experience with furniture assembly but want to make sure I have everything necessary on hand before I start to avoid any issues. I am especially interested in whether the included mounting hardware is sufficient on its own or if special drill bits, wrenches, or positioning aids are recommended.

Perhaps someone has already installed doors on a KALLAX and can share their experience regarding which tools are truly essential and which additional aids might be helpful for a precise and secure installation.

Hello Caleb,

in case the budget for a drill guide is a bit tight, I have had good experiences with homemade drilling templates. A piece of thick MDF board, with 35 mm (1.4 inches) holes pre-drilled, can serve as a guide if you secure it properly.

It is important that the template is stable so that the Forstner bit does not slip. Clamps also help with this.

Otherwise: measure carefully, as already recommended, and double-check before drilling. Good luck!

I will report back on how it went!

That’s great! From my own experience, installation goes much smoother with the right tools. A small tip: if you want to adjust doors after drilling, use height-adjustable hinges – these usually come with IKEA KALLAX doors.

This way, after securing the screws, you can fine-tune whether the door fits perfectly in the frame or needs slight correction.

Looking forward to your feedback!

A quick update from me:

I have now ordered the Forstner bit and an affordable drilling jig. I will start the assembly over the weekend.

Thanks again for all the helpful tips! Especially the information that without a Forstner bit, it is not possible to make the correct holes in non-pre-drilled KALLAX shelving parts was crucial.

I will get back to you once I am finished or if any questions come up.
