Hello,

we are looking for an electric sectional garage door to retrofit.

Our garage currently has a manual up-and-over door, which we want to replace with an electric sectional door.

There is power available in the garage.

Which garage door opener would you recommend?

Hörmann is probably a good choice, but are there any other good alternatives?

The garage door should work with two remote controls and have a wall switch inside the house next to the front door. (When we leave through the front door, we want to press the switch and have the garage door open so that it is already open by the time we arrive.)

If possible, the garage door should also be made "smart home" capable, either immediately or with an additional module, for example compatible with Matter.

Thank you very much for your help.

Ok, thanks. So we only need a switching contact. Is it possible to check the garage door status—whether it is open or closed—via the wireless switching contact?

Is there a direct app connection from Hörmann?

Which Hörmann operator would you recommend? I don’t have much experience, for example, with the operating speed—what is a good average value?

High-speed motors are great.
Every electric drive has an external switch contact.
There is no direct app connection, but many manufacturers use the external contact along with a Wi-Fi module to connect to common smart home assistants.

Simply choose the Supramatic E4 or P4 depending on the gate size and don’t overthink it. Whether there is an app available, you can easily check yourself online. Creating multiple accounts on forums works fine too.

Otherwise, a simple switch contact to control the drive obviously cannot detect the actual position of the gate. For that, you need sensors at the top and bottom or an interface that can provide real feedback. However, you don’t have that since there is no KNX system, so you only have contacts and sensors. What Homee can do in this context hasn’t interested me so far.

We are getting a standard prefabricated garage.

I think a Supramatic E4 will be completely sufficient for us.
The door width will probably be between 2.60 and 2.80 meters (8.5 and 9.2 feet).

Does anyone have experience with the radio range of Hörmann transmitters?
The garage is about 5 meters (16 feet) from the front door, around the corner and positioned slightly closer to the garden.
