ᐅ Required installation height is 12 mm, but the chosen vinyl flooring is only 4.5 mm thick.

Hello everyone,

Here is the issue: Our kitchen is being completely renovated, including installing a new floor. The selected vinyl flooring has a thickness of 4.5mm (0.18 inches) – the floors in the adjacent rooms are about 12mm (0.47 inches) high.
We would like to get close to that height at least. The first thought was to simply use insulation underlayment of the appropriate thickness. However, no matter where we look, we can only find underlayments approved for vinyl with a thickness of up to 2mm (0.08 inches). In contrast, for laminate or engineered wood flooring, underlayments of 5mm (0.20 inches) thickness are readily available. The temptation is definitely there to just use those...
What are your opinions and tips on this matter?
Thanks in advance.
Best regards,
N

Leveling compound is specifically designed for that purpose. Why should it be avoided?

Because then in the kitchen, only vinyl flooring can be installed in the future. Tiles, laminate, and hardwood flooring are practically ruled out, as the leveling compound would have to be removed again (which is very messy).

OK, to answer the questions:

Why does it have to be exactly this vinyl flooring?

Have you ever gone flooring shopping with your wife/girlfriend (or both at the same time )? I think that answers the question.

As I already said, it’s a huge effort, and in the end, the subfloors on that level won’t be even anymore, and you’re stuck with a 4 cm (1.6 inch) difference forever? No.
I guess option 3, as mentioned by nordanney, is probably the most acceptable solution.

Why did I even post this question here in the forum? Well, I had hoped someone would say, “Yes, your problem is a common one, and there is this product xyz that lets you increase the build-up height as much as you like.” Apparently, that’s not the case, but the thread still helped me anyway. =)

You simply don’t use 4mm vinyl. It limits your options for switching to other types of flooring.

I don’t see that as a problem. You can’t plan for 30 years of changing tastes…

I didn’t think nordanney’s option 2 was that bad either.

We have a new build and still decided to live with the small step. It doesn’t bother us at all, and we have kept all flooring options open for the future. We looked at the 7mm (0.3 inches) on a tape measure and decided that it’s really not a big deal.
