Hello everyone,

In our building permit / planning permission, we have a knee wall height of 80cm (31.5 inches).
Since every centimeter counts, we would like to try increasing this to 1m (39 inches).
What is the best way to do this?
Is it possible to submit an application before filing the building permit / planning permission?
Or should we simply submit the building permit / planning permission with a knee wall height of 1m (39 inches) and hope that it gets approved?
I have heard several times that an increase of +20cm (8 inches) is usually approved without issues.

Best regards

You probably mean the drawings for the building permit / planning permission

Yes, that's what I meant : )

Is there someone in the neighborhood who has a meter? Then ask them.

No, there isn’t, but it’s a small community, so they probably aren’t too overwhelmed right now. I think we’ll give it a try : )

However, I could imagine that you would then need completely new plans from the architect... What does he say about that?

We submitted only one building notification and had our special request – a deviation from the building boundary – approved in advance through a separate application (approximately 100 EUR).

I don’t have an architect, only a draftsperson. And they still need to be consulted : )

Or is it noted on the knee wall that it may only be 80 instead of 100cm (31.5 instead of 39.4 inches) high, and then the zoning plan is approved?

I rather doubt that. It also slightly affects room volumes and heating demand calculations. Usually, you’d want to adjust the roof pitch instead of simply losing 20 cm (7.9 inches) of headroom linearly in the sloped area.

I just don’t want to waste time unnecessarily with multiple rounds.

In that case, I would recommend calling first: while this approach isn’t very binding for a “yes,” a clear “no,” meaning “this is a matter of principle, the character of the building is defined by the knee wall parameter,” should be possible to communicate verbally.

The latter is a common reason for fixing the knee wall height—especially in cases where the ridge height isn’t tightly restricted, so it’s less about the building volume and more about limiting the knee wall itself.

Such a restriction is often seen as a key architectural folklore element in building design. ;-)
