Hello everyone,

As part of the renovation, we would like to replace the stair treads with new wooden ones.
I’m wondering if it’s possible to do this step by step from top to bottom by myself.

The carpenter would create templates and deliver the treads pre-cut to fit.

I would start at the top and support each tread underneath as I go down.
Has anyone done this before? Does it work the way I’m thinking?

Also, I’m wondering where I can get new spacers for between the treads.

At the same time, I’m looking for a Plan B to see if the steps can be treated in some way (painting?).

Since I, first of all, understand the value of such stairs, secondly know that the trend for them is making a comeback, and thirdly am aware of the efforts needed to undo modifications, my immediate first suggestion would be to recommend a reversible solution like applying a film. Specifically, only on the tread area, without having to work around the bolts. But stairs should definitely be slip-resistant, and I don’t know of any suitable films for that purpose.

However, I really don’t see why, in five years, when you’re the prince of this, you would want to miss out on the “aahs and oohs” of your guests—“yeah, roadrun87 was ahead of his time, he already had that in 2017.” By the way, it only looks truly stylish with exactly that railing.

By then, the film won’t have paid off through enjoyment of use, and the scrubbing to remove the adhesive completely won’t be quickly forgotten either.

Enjoy your amazing, S-Class level staircase, and don’t undervalue it just because it came “included.”

As I said: just ask for fun how much it would cost to get one new today—you’ll get a reality check.

What’s happening here is honestly amazing.

If the original poster finds the staircase a nightmare and doesn’t want it, and everyone starts sharing their opinions about trends and I don’t know what else...
