Hello everyone,

As part of the renovation, we would like to replace the stair treads with new wooden ones.
I’m wondering if it’s possible to do this step by step from top to bottom by myself.

The carpenter would create templates and deliver the treads pre-cut to fit.

I would start at the top and support each tread underneath as I go down.
Has anyone done this before? Does it work the way I’m thinking?

Also, I’m wondering where I can get new spacers for between the treads.

Not finalized yet.

However, we have received a quote for a complete staircase with wooden railing and solid oak steps, which we like very much.

But as mentioned, nothing is final yet.

Does the offer include only the new staircase, or does it also cover the professional removal of the old one?

That is actually the crucial point. From a logistical standpoint, removing the old staircase is no easy task. Have you considered the implications of carrying it out yourself? Also, it is strongly recommended to have the helpers covered by accident insurance (and provide training on accident prevention regulations). The steps cannot simply be taken out like shelf boards.

P.S.: I just asked Kenngott about this. For the finishing work, it would require two people working for two days (mind you, two professionals for whom this is daily work), and of course, it would require temporary support measures.

The idea of literally removing the old staircase step by step and installing the new one that way is rather amusing. In my imagination, it’s like an episode of ToolTime featuring Benny Hill as a guest star.

What a staircase builder offers for an already empty or nearly empty stairwell is a completely different matter.

We are also in talks with a company regarding the interior finishing.

At the same time, I am looking for a Plan B to see if the steps can be treated in some way (painting?) and fitted with a new railing.

Take a look at the so-called pebble carpet. There are different ways to "change" a staircase.

As someone already mentioned, this will likely involve five-figure amounts invested in a loss of value.
