Hello everyone, I recently bought an IKEA Malm chest of drawers, and now I’ve noticed that the drawer slides are worn out and no longer work smoothly. My question is: What is the best way to replace the MALM drawer slides? Are there any special tools I should have, or common pitfalls to watch out for during disassembly and reassembly? I would appreciate a detailed and practical description, as I want to avoid damaging anything or assembling it incorrectly.

Use pneumatic or cordless screwdrivers with caution

Interesting point – but actually, the Malm components from IKEA are so inexpensive that it’s not a big deal if you occasionally overtighten something. Perhaps the bigger concern should be whether the model is durable enough to justify replacing the rails at all. IKEA designs products for quick replacement, not for lasting durability.

I would like to add: If you experience issues with the track, cleaning it beforehand and lightly lubricating it with silicone spray can help. However, if the track is bent or heavily worn, replacing it is definitely the right solution. It is important to choose the exact model during installation, as different generations of the MALM series use different guide systems.

MALM drawers usually have the runners secured with small Phillips screws. It’s best to place the drawer on a soft surface to avoid scratches.

Thank you for the detailed instructions; that sounds very helpful. The tip about using a soft surface is new to me.

If the runner is bent, replacement is the proper solution.

When removing the runners, is there a way to check them for deformation or even straighten them? Or would that only become clear after removal? I don’t want to buy unnecessary parts if the problem lies elsewhere.

During installation, you can check the rails for bends by placing them on a flat surface. If they are visibly warped, you should replace them. Straightening is usually not very effective, as it can impair the function of the ball bearings.
