Hello everyone, I have some IKEA Malm dressers with drawers that currently use the classic plastic runners. After some time, these start to squeak and don’t run smoothly anymore, so I’m considering replacing the drawer runners with proper metal slides.

My question is: Has anyone had experience replacing the original runners on Malm drawers with metal side or under-mount slides? What dimensions and fastenings should be considered to ensure the drawers run smoothly and remain stable?

If there are specific slides you would recommend, or tips for the conversion and installation, I’d appreciate hearing them. I want the drawers to be more durable, quieter, and run better, but without having to completely disassemble the dresser or do extensive modifications to the drawers. Thanks for your help!

Converting the drawer slides on an IKEA Malm from plastic to metal runners requires careful preparation:

- Precisely measure the original mounting points (screw spacing and slide length)
- Select compatible drawer slides (e.g., 350mm (14 inches) full extension, side mount)
- Check the thickness of the side panels to adjust slots or pre-drilled holes accordingly
- Completely remove old runners and, if necessary, prime or repaint the surfaces
- Use appropriate screws for installation (countersunk head, matching the pre-drilled holes)

Note that partial extension and full extension slides differ mechanically: full extension allows the drawer to be pulled out completely but is somewhat more complex to install.

Summary: This conversion requires accurate measurements and careful handling of the dresser components to achieve durable, stable guidance with metal runners.

Hey, great attitude! You can definitely do it, trust me!

A few months ago, I did exactly the same thing—my Malm drawers were a disaster, squeaking and sticking, really annoying.

My advice: just get a set of full-extension drawer slides; they last forever and keep the modification fairly manageable. Simply remove the old slides, install the new ones, screw everything in, and test.

I didn’t take the drawers apart completely; separating the carcass from the drawer is enough to work on. After that, they run smoothly, very quietly and solidly!

Go ahead, grab your screwdriver—you got this! 🙂

Remove the old plastic bearings and use suitable metal drawer slides matching the length of the drawer.

Check the side measurements, mark the screw holes, drill through, and install the metal runners.

Ensure they are evenly aligned; otherwise, the drawer will stick.
