Hello everyone,

I noticed that the drawer slides on one side of my IKEA Malm dresser are no longer working properly. The drawer sticks and doesn’t slide smoothly anymore. My question is: How exactly can I replace the drawer slides on the IKEA Malm series myself? I would appreciate a step-by-step guide that covers both removing the old slides and installing the new ones.

It would be great if any specific details related to the Malm model are also addressed, as I’ve read that IKEA sometimes uses different versions. Thanks in advance for your tips!

A quick question: Which spare parts set did you get? IKEA sells different versions, some are only suitable for certain production years of the MALM.

Thanks for the detailed explanation, that helps a lot! I bought the part with article number 60436778, which IKEA support recommended to me. It should fit my model (approximately from 2018).

Could there be any difficulties during assembly with the clips, or is this a generally compatible type?

Also, what tools would you recommend? I have a standard Phillips screwdriver and a small flathead screwdriver available.

Hello pimola,

Regarding the article number 60436778, I can tell you that this type of replacement part is very common for the Malm dresser from this production period. The clips are actually made of plastic and require some care when removing them.

The tool you have is basically suitable. I would just recommend having pliers or a small pry tool ready in case the clips are stuck. It’s best to place the drawer on a soft surface to avoid scratches.

Before removing the old glides, make sure to carefully check whether there are any screws or hidden clips on the side panels of the drawer that might be overlooked.

If you want, I can also provide you with a brief guide on how to best release the clips without damaging them.

Wow, the topic of MALM drawer runners can sometimes be a bit tricky, but it’s nothing you can’t handle with a little patience! 🙂

My advice: Take your time and be patient with the clips, as they can be quite stubborn.

Exactly, don’t let them break on you, or you’ll need to get replacements. Think of it like building LEGO for adults—that’s fun too! 😉

And remember: Sometimes a bit of lubricant (e.g., silicone spray) after installation helps the drawers slide smoothly.

Good morning,

I would like to add that it is advisable to check the drawer sides for cracks or damage before replacing them. Especially with MALM, the plastic edges on the slides can wear out over time.

Another tip: the drawer slides are often installed not as a full rail but as two partial rails. So when purchasing replacement parts, you should check whether you need a complete set or individual segments.

If you get the part individually and do not replace the entire set: make sure to check whether the retaining loops and tabs on the drawer are still in good condition.

One more question for you, pimola: Do you want to keep the old drawer runners or dispose of them right away?

Good question! I’m leaning towards keeping the old ones for now, just in case there are issues installing the new ones or if I need to revert to the original components. Thanks for the tip!

I assume the clips can be carefully released with a small screwdriver as described, without breaking them immediately. For testing, should I pull the drawer out halfway or remove it completely for disassembly?

I’d appreciate some brief advice on the best approach before I get started.

Pull the drawer all the way out to work on it comfortably from the side. Pulling it out halfway makes it difficult.
