Hello,

I am currently replacing all switches and sockets. So far, this hasn’t been a problem and everything is working smoothly.

Only the switch in the bathroom is puzzling me.

Attached are photos of the old switch and the new one.
L is clear. However, the new switch does not have an N like the old one.
L is also the live wire, which I have verified.

No matter whether I connect the blue or brown wire on the right or left, when I operate the switch, the circuit breaker trips.

Does anyone have any advice?

You don’t have either of those. You have the Kopp 5036. Get one of the other two and just reconnect it, then it should work. The only difference is the neon lamp, red or white.

I have no idea which one you mean by the Kopp 5036. But I have exactly the one linked above. It has the white lamp installed and looks like the photo from the back.

A short circuit between L and N will obviously cause the breaker to trip...

Leave out the blue (N) wire at the switch.

No, of course not. I had them connected separately on the left and right. But yes, then the breaker naturally trips.

If I leave out the N wire, the switch works as intended, but the lamp does not light up.

Therefore, I now assume that although the switch is meant for lighting, it is still the wrong one. That’s why I linked the one I have above and the other one that is also available.

Sorry, but just one thing:
HIRE AN ELECTRICIAN.

The old switch had an indicator light, which is why the neutral (N) wire was connected. Otherwise, a neutral wire should NEVER be connected to a switch. You don’t have the background knowledge to tinker with this yourself. Reading bits and pieces from the internet won’t help here. Offering advice is not appropriate.

You are putting yourself and others at risk. Electricians exist for a reason. They are friendly professionals who will also check if someone has previously done shoddy work on the fixture.

And the the new switch also has an indicator light.

The wiring diagram is clearly shown on it. If you don’t understand what happens when you connect the neutral and a live wire opposite each other, – GET AN ELECTRICIAN. Good grief.
By the way, your insurance won’t pay you a single cent if your house burns down.

Your photo clearly shows 5036. That’s a standard single-pole / two-way switch. Are you sure it has a lamp?

Now people even get warnings just for quoting others who accidentally posted a link... on top of that, there are actual threats about receiving an invoice. Seems like it’s also up to the admin’s discretion when you get a message like that. I’ve been online for 20 years and have never read such nonsense. Thanks for all the helpful tips over the last 5½ years. I’m signing off here. 🙂
