Hello everyone,
I have an older IKEA Billy bookcase that I would like to update visually. Specifically, I want to replace the fronts (door and drawer fronts). My question is: Are there any sources outside of IKEA—meaning manufacturers or retailers—that offer high-quality and well-fitting fronts for the Billy system?
I am aware that IKEA itself supplies replacement parts, but often these are either no longer available or offered in very limited styles. Therefore, I am looking for alternative sources—ideally with more modern designs or different materials.
Does anyone have experience with third-party suppliers or maybe even tips for DIY solutions? I look forward to your recommendations and advice on where to find such fronts or what options exist.

A brief addition about vinyl wrapping:
Professional vinyl wrapping usually costs more than expected. There are inexpensive DIY wrapping kits available, but the effort involved is greater than just replacing panels.
If you want to do it yourself: Use special vinyl squeegees and a heat gun to warm the vinyl, as this helps prevent air bubbles.

Are there any experiences regarding the durability of laminate films? In my experience:
Laminate films last about 3 years with normal use if applied correctly.
In kitchens and heavily used furniture, peeling can occur sooner, while on BILLY shelves used in living areas, they can last somewhat longer.
One tip: If you choose film-covered fronts, additionally seal the edges with clear varnish or edge banding to reduce peeling.
If you aim for original appearance or higher durability, it’s worth considering painted MDF fronts from specialist companies.
If you are looking for third-party suppliers, here is an important note:
Many suppliers measure and manufacture according to the standard BILLY door thickness of about 16 mm (0.6 inches). Older versions may vary slightly. Dimensions such as hinge hole spacing, drilling pattern, and door thickness are critical.
This is usually true. However, when using third-party products, I always recommend purchasing a sample door for a single compartment before replacing the entire unit to avoid any surprises later on.

Thanks to everyone for the detailed and helpful contributions!
The decision now is to first test a foil finish, since the costs are manageable, and at the same time gather local quotes for custom-made MDF fronts.
I will check the exact hinges and measurements and get back once the complete implementation is done.
For anyone who comes across this: If any of you know reliable sources outside of IKEA, please share! Thanks :-)
