pascal_ra4 Jan 2023 09:37Hello everyone,
I recently noticed that a drawer slide on my BILLY shelf is damaged. Since I don’t want to buy the original slide from IKEA (either due to delivery time or because it’s currently unavailable), I’m looking for suitable alternatives that I can use instead.
My main problem: the drawer no longer runs smoothly because the slide has jumped out of the track and the rollers are sticking. I need to know if there are common standard slides that are compatible with the BILLY shelf and can be easily replaced. Perhaps there are also tips on what to look for when buying a new slide, such as dimensions or load capacity.
Does anyone have good knowledge of the profile dimensions and types of slides to make recommendations? I would appreciate any experiences or well-fitting alternatives.
Thanks in advance!

Hello pascal_ra,
I’m familiar with the issue regarding BILLY shelves, as the original runners are often no longer available or can be quite expensive. Here’s what I can recommend:
1. Measure dimensions: It’s important to note the length of the runner (usually 40–45 cm (16–18 inches) for BILLY drawers) and the width of the guide edge. Most BILLY runners use simple telescopic slides with two segments.
2. Compatible alternatives: Many furniture and hardware stores offer roller runners (also called drawer slides) in standard sizes – for example, from brands like Hettich or Blum. Make sure the load capacity is at least 15–20 kg (33–44 lbs), which is usually sufficient for BILLY drawers.
3. Installation tips: The hole positions for the runners at IKEA are specific, meaning either the new runners must have mounting options at similar heights, or you will need to drill new holes.
4. Type of guide: BILLY drawers use simple roller runners, often without ball bearings. If possible, you can also switch to ball-bearing or soft-close slides – just ensure they fit the internal dimensions.
Summary: I would compare standard furniture drawer slides up to about 45 cm (18 inches) in length at hardware stores, adjust the screw holes if necessary, and make sure the runner matches the drawer width. If you have more details about the exact drawer width, I’m happy to help you select the right option.
Good luck with your project!

I fully agree with Nofege’s assessment and would like to add:
In addition, I recommend switching to slightly higher-quality slides with ball bearings if the budget allows. This significantly improves the smoothness of operation and provides greater user comfort over time.
The conversion is usually straightforward; however, I advise keeping the existing drill holes whenever possible and only adding new ones if absolutely necessary to maintain stability.
If still available, bringing along IKEA spare parts as samples can help to compare the exact measurements.
In general, I would not recommend cheap, unbranded slides from generic online shops as fit and quality often vary.
I hope this helps.

Hello everyone :-) I had the same issue with my BILLY, and I can say: it doesn’t always have to be the official IKEA part! I once got simple telescopic drawer slides from the hardware store, about 40cm (16 inches) long.
A quick tip: These slides usually run on rollers, not ball bearings. I installed ones with ball bearings anyway – they run very smoothly! Just make sure to check the measurements beforehand, so the drawer doesn’t end up too narrow or too wide 😉
I agree, my retrofit worked well without needing to drill too much.
On a serious note, often a small repair like this is a great weekend project and really satisfying in the end 🙂

Hello pascal_ra,
Your very good question is one I would like to examine systematically, as it is especially relevant for users of IKEA furniture.
First of all: The BILLY shelf is very common, so the drawers serve as a good example for many IKEA furniture pieces with similar sliding mechanisms.
Basically, you have two main options:
1. Original replacement parts from IKEA: Sometimes difficult to obtain at short notice, but they offer a perfect fit without modifications.
2. Universal drawer slides:
- Most BILLY drawers are equipped with simple roller slides, not full-extension slides.
- The typical dimensions for BILLY drawer slides are about 40–45 cm (16–18 inches) in length, 12–14 mm (0.5–0.6 inches) slide width, with roller rather than ball bearings.
- You can often find replacements at hardware stores, for example from manufacturers like Hettich or Blum. Pay attention to whether they are telescopic slides with soft-close function or classic roller guides—the latter correspond to the IKEA variant.
My advice:
- Measure and compare the drawer length and slide width.
- Check before purchase whether the mounting points are compatible or if new holes will be needed.
If you know the shelf’s opening height, you can ensure the drawer will slide in and out easily. There are also combined options with ball bearings and soft-close if you want to upgrade comfort.
Finally, a small caution:
If there are deviations in dimensions, do not underestimate the load capacity of the slides. A slide that is too weak can quickly lead to damage.
If you like, I can prepare a list of model-specific alternatives, provided you have the exact measurements.
Have a great weekend!
