Hello everyone,
I have a specific question about the IKEA Billy bookshelf, which is common in many homes. I have noticed that the original screws and fasteners can sometimes become a bit loose or unreliable over time—often due to frequent moving or stress. Now I’m wondering if it would make sense to replace all the screws in the Billy bookshelf with higher-quality ones, for example stainless steel, to improve long-term stability.
Has anyone had experience with completely replacing the screws? Is it really necessary or a bit excessive? Are there specific types or sizes of screws I should pay attention to in order to avoid damaging the shelf? And could this somehow improve or worsen the assembly or durability?
Thanks in advance for your opinions and advice!

I understand why you are considering replacing all the screws. Generally, the screws and wall plugs provided are designed for their intended use and should remain stable for several years if handled properly. However, there are situations where it makes sense to replace them:
– If the screws are already visibly damaged or rusty
– If the shelf will be subjected to very heavy loads
– If you frequently disassemble and reassemble the shelf
When replacing them, I recommend choosing screws with the same dimensions and ideally the same thread type, to avoid damaging the furniture. High-quality stainless steel is a good choice because it is rust-resistant and durable.
But be careful: Using screws that are too thick or too thin can damage the material or even reduce stability.
If you have any questions, I’m happy to help!

It’s great that you’re giving the BILLY shelf such careful thought! 😊
I did the same myself because I noticed the screws were a bit worn out. I replaced all of them with stainless steel screws, which are a bit more durable. Since then, the shelf has been rock solid, and I don’t have to worry anymore.
My advice: definitely use screws with the same thread and length. It’s better to invest a bit more—it’s totally worth it!
Give it a try—if you enjoy DIY, it’s actually a lot of fun. 😉

For a detailed assessment: Completely replacing all screws in the BILLY shelf is only truly beneficial for specific reasons.
The original screws are optimized for the construction. They are typically made of mild steel with a zinc coating and fit precisely with the drilled holes and connecting components.
Possible advantages of replacement:
- Resistance to rust (for example, stainless steel)
- Higher mechanical strength under greater load
- Improved appearance, if desired
Disadvantages and risks:
- Incorrect dimensions or thread pitch can damage the wood or make the connection unstable
- Sometimes the self-locking properties of the original screws are better matched to the shelving design
Conclusion: Replacement is only worthwhile if there is existing damage or conditions prone to rust. Otherwise, it is generally unnecessary and carries risks if the exact suitable screws are not used.

For example, how do I measure the thread pitch or identify the exact type of screw used in BILLY?

sometimes the self-locking features of the original screws are better suited to the shelving design – do you mean that the original screws might have a special thread or coating that could make replacement more difficult? It would be good to know if this only applies to specific screws or is generally the case. Thanks again for your advice!
