Hello! 🙂

I am facing the task of having a small house renovated, but I have absolutely no knowledge about it.

It shouldn’t take forever, so I don’t have all the time in the world to extensively research the many different aspects.

Therefore, my question: How would you approach this?

- I was thinking of inviting 2-3 architects to the house to hear from each one what they would do/how they would proceed, etc.

I thought that an architect should be independent and basically wouldn’t have an interest in pushing anything on me.

- Additionally, I could have some construction companies specializing in renovations come by and also hear from them what needs to be done – knowing that unlike architects, they do want to sell something – but just to get some extra opinions/information.

- I don’t know what other professions besides architects and construction companies would make sense to consult. Building biologists? Energy consultants? Do you have suggestions on whom else it would make sense to ask for advice?

- Then, hopefully, after consulting the architects and construction companies, I will have a clearer picture and opinion on what should be done and how, and I would put the whole project in the hands of an independent architect, who would then commission one or several construction companies (all in coordination with me) and oversee the entire execution.

And if you have any tips on how to find a good architect or other experts (unfortunately, I don’t know anyone in my area whom I could ask), I’d like to hear how to go about it.

That’s roughly how I’m thinking 🙂 Is that a good approach? How would you do it (in my situation)?

Thank you very much for your help!!

P.S.

The main concerns are:

- Insulation
- Water in the basement: how to make it watertight?
- Optimal energy supply for the house
