Hello everyone,

As part of renovation work, I would prefer to keep an existing staircase. Unfortunately, we don’t like its appearance. Do you have any ideas on how to refresh a staircase like this? A new handrail is obvious.
Is it possible to coat or paint engineered stone concrete? Looking forward to your suggestions!
Best regards

In the end, it’s a matter of personal preference. What are you thinking of? Painting or coating can be quite prone to dirt depending on the color. Another option is to cover it with wood or similar materials, and from underneath, you could either clad it or simply “paint” it. My sister had a similar staircase, but the closed version, and they covered it with wood.

Yes, we have also considered covering them with wood or similar materials. The stair treads bend slightly when walked on because they are cantilevered. Therefore, the material needs to be somewhat flexible.

Working with wood is complicated because the steps are asymmetrical and probably not all the same size.

Installing a kind of carpet on top could work with a manageable amount of effort.

I find the appearance a bit unusual but not disastrous; it somehow has its own charm.

Maybe you will simply get used to it?

The light gray steps do not stand out against a white wall. The wall should be painted a dark color.

The best method to change the color of architectural concrete and to alter its base color is through fully opaque painting. The paint layer forms a coating similar to that of painted concrete surfaces.
