Lidan31Hello everyone,
I’m currently facing the problem of wanting to remove individual shelves from my IKEA BILLY bookcase without damaging the furniture or leaving any marks. The bookcase is older, and I want to avoid breaking the shelf supports or tearing out the drilled holes. The shelves fit quite tightly, and I’m concerned that a rough approach could damage the entire unit.
Are there any proven techniques or tools for removing the shelves without causing damage? Maybe experiences with a specific lever or something similar? I would really appreciate concrete tips, especially if someone has successfully done this with older models.
Thanks in advance!

Be patient, and you can do this without any damage.
It also helps to stabilize the bookcase beforehand, for example with clamps that prevent twisting while you’re prying. Good luck, you’ll definitely manage it! :-)
Regarding the question: Removing BILLY shelves – how to do it without damage?
The BILLY shelf typically uses plastic shelf supports that fit into pre-drilled holes. To remove a shelf without causing damage, follow these steps:
1. First, remove any load from the shelf (i.e., if it is stocked or weighted)
2. Grip the shelf on both sides with your hands (do not push from underneath)
3. Pull the shelf upward with slight wiggling to release the supports
Alternatively, a plastic wedge or flat spatula can be used for assistance, but avoid applying strong leverage to the wooden panels to prevent chipping.
Do not twist the shelf sideways during the process, as this can cause the holes to tear out.
This method has been tested and ensures damage-free removal.

I’d like to add a brief guide on how to do this correctly, because most people know you can remove the shelves, but often start off the wrong way:
1. Preparation: Make sure the shelf unit is freestanding and nothing is resting on the shelves.
2. Tools: A thin plastic spatula or a sturdy, thin plastic wedge works best. Metal tools can cause scratches.
3. Find the leverage point: Gently slide the spatula under the shelf frame next to the shelf support.
4. Gradual release: Carefully lift the shelf slightly—not with force, but only a minimal amount at a time.
5. Work evenly: Slowly work your way around several points to free the support.
Common mistakes: Applying too much force at just one point, which can cause chipped wood. Pressing hard from below instead of lifting upwards.
In summary: Patience and choosing the right tool are key. If you take it slowly, the shelf can be removed without damage. Good luck if you try this! 🙂

Patience and choosing the right tool are crucial. That really sums it up. At first, I was also afraid of damaging the shelf since the panel was stuck quite firmly. On my first try, I was too impatient and bent one of the brackets.
Now I know it really helps to lift the panel with both hands, gently wiggle it, and pull it parallel to the back panel. If you feel resistance, make small adjustments before continuing, rather than using force.
How do you usually handle it when the panels have been in place for a while and might be slightly swollen or stuck? Does anyone have tips on how to widen the gap without damaging the wood?
